Life In Motion

Let four women who know no limits inspire you to exceed your potential in body, mind, soul and style

Yasmin Baker

26, Emirati

Discipline: Aerial silks

“Feeling in shape and taking care of your mind are extremely important. Working out really gives me that peace of mind and I feel very lucky to have found solace and enjoyment in being active and fit. For me, it’s life and wellbeing over aesthetics, always. And pushing my physical abilities and challenging my body gives me a high that I’ve found in few other areas in my life. That’s all the fitspo I need to keep it up. I was first exposed to aerial silks as a child and took my first class in university. I continue to do it because it forces me to challenge weaknesses specific to me. Beyond health, sport and fitness also offer a path for self-betterment, be it physical or mental. Through sport I’ve learnt patience, confidence, strength, resilience, humility, body awareness... It’s about continual progress, determination, self-growth and learning. Every step, even injury, can be turned into a positive lesson. Giving the onus of ‘being the very best version of yourself’ to each individual woman allows her to choose what ‘the best’ means, be it the best mother, teacher, athlete or politician. The standards are up to her – how ultimately empowering is that?”

Lana El Sahely

27, Lebanese

Discipline: Cardio & weight training

"I’ve been on a health journey for a few years now, doing everything I can to become fitter and healthier. It’s been very hard, and it’s still not easy, but
I’ve come far and I will never stop this journey. Health and fitness have the ability to continuously make me the best version of myself, because simply to me, when I want, I can. A better lifestyle can be achieved when you put your mind and effort into it. The post-workout endorphin rush is my motivation; this explosion of well-being in my cells after a hard training session is the best reward after pushing yourself to the limit and discovering you can do so much more than you thought you could. A strong will is essential in feeling confident and beautiful, as well as staying motivated. I never stop training because of how good the post-workout makes me feel and I’ve learned that working out is my little break, an hour of the day that is all mine. Being fit is essential to the work I do as a blogger and entrepreneur, simply because it makes me feel good, confident and more focused. It isn’t about being skinny, it’s about setting achievable goals in order to maintain and protect your body.”

Balqis Al Rashed

33, Saudi

Discipline: Hula Hooping

“Hula hooping allows me to experience myself as a strong physical being, to be aware of my thoughts and feelings, teaching me to improve, grow and let go. It also allows me to focus on my power and to be aware of the energy I am generating and how it transforms me on all levels. I do what my body is asking of me. We are expressive beings and being physically active is simply an extension of that nature. Staying fit and healthy means I can achieve clarity, balance, focus, awareness, play and flow. My motivation is growth and change, while working out becomes a tool for me to generate enough energy to manifest what I desire. I believe that being the best is all that you can ask from a person – to know their potential
and be the best they can, free of judgements, fear and restrictions.”

Karen Mattar

28, Lebanese/French

Discipline: Yoga & meditation

"For me, fitness is not a destination, it is a way of life. I see it as encouraging women to be the best version of themselves by using sport as an active channel of self-expression. It encourages women to be confident and strong, to achieve their goals. When you feel in shape, your body is healthy. When your body is healthy, so is your mind. When your mind is healthy, you have a better outlook on life.
I believe that being active is incredibly important on a physical and mental level. Yoga is physically challenging and gives me a way to express myself, as well as reconnect with who I am. It’s all about finding the right balance and listening to your body. It helps me celebrate my imperfections and allows me to accept myself for who I am today.”
