Elizabeth Kennedy
Elizabeth Kennedy, the New York-based designer known for her red carpet-ready gowns and A-list-approved eveningwear, has launched in Dubai’s Harvey Nichols

During her very first visit to Dubai, which the New Yorker says she ‘absolutely loves’, Bazaar caught up with the former Donna Karan, J. Mendel and Max Mara designer to chat starting her own label, top trends for the Autumn/Winter season and what it was really like creating a dress with husband and artist Igor Bogojevic.

The Elizabeth Kennedy woman is…
Smart, adventurous, timeless and not afraid of taking chances and making bold statements in her dressing.

If you weren’t a designer you’d be…
I was really interested in archaeology as a kid. I used to have a rock collection and read a lot of books on Egypt.

Favourite trend of the season…
I am really excited about the longer calf line and ankle length winter coats – they are very elegant and chic.

Favourite local designer…
During my visit to Dubai I’ve discovered another eveningwear label, which I love: Rami Al Ali.

An iconic fashion piece you wished you designed…
I am a huge fan of Charles James, so it would probably be his famous Clover Leaf gown (pictured below). It’s one of my favourite gowns of all times.

Your dream dinner party guest would be…
Marline Monroe - she was fabulous! I have a book that’s a compilation of her old journals, poems and letters she wrote. She is so fascinating.  I’d also love Mozart, Barak Obama and Audrey Hepburn.

One piece of advice you’d give to a budding fashion designer…
To apprentice and to work for other brands - especially when you are in school. Work experience is so important because you learn a lot in a job that you don’t learn in a classroom. It’s so important for designers to work for other people and see different sides of the business. A lot of people think that when you have your own brand you can just design whatever you want, but that’s not the case at all. You have clients to cater for, investors to please and PR requests to fulfil, so I think apprenticing and learning under somebody else is such invaluable experience.

Your favourite Elizabeth Kennedy design is…
For my Spring/Summer 2018 collection my favourite dress is the grown I created with my husband. It was the most labour intensive because of all the embroidery, which are hand drilled and custom made.

Working with your husband was…
Great! We’ve never worked together before. We are very different, so there was a bit of clashing, but it was an enjoyable experience because we learned a lot about the way each other work in the process. He’s an artist, but he never realised his work on a three-dimensional scale.

The ultimate goal for the Elizabeth Kennedy brand is…
To appeal to women of different demographics and dress women all over the world. We already our ready-to-wear line and we are creating a bridal collection for the first time in April. I’d love to try my hand at cosmetics as well. I want to build a global brand – it’s an exciting though!
