Just six months after launching, Tara Zadeh’s line of handbags have already been picked up by Moda Operandi and Net-a-Porter. Bazaar speaks exclusively to the designer about how her Iranian heritage has inspired her latest collection

Iranian Tara Zadeh was born in the U.S. and grew up in Paris, so it seems almost inevitable that multiculturalism and bridging the gap between East and West are the cornerstones of her eponymous label. Launching just six month ago, Tara’s line of luxury handbags were instantly picked up by e-com giants Moda Operandi with Net-a-Porter hot on their heels, snapping up the brand’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Bazaar speaks exclusively to the new designer-to-watch.

Designer Tara Zadeh

Harper's Bazaar Arabia: Tell us a bit about your background and how you got in to fashion.
Tara Zadeh: I studied graphic design at Parsons University in New York and every summer I would make sure I would throw myself into the fashion world and interned for all sorts of different companies and brands. I worked in the advertising department at Chanel, on the editorial team at Dazed & Confused and at creative agency Lloyd & Co before graduating and starting my first job as senior designer at Interview magazine.

HBA: Why did you decide to create your own brand and why specifically handbags?
TZ: I’ve always collected handbags from a young age; I love foraging through little markets on my travels around the world and collecting unique pieces. Having my own label was always a dream of mine, so one day I just decided to take the plunge and launch my own brand.

HBA: What is the inspiration behind your Autumn/Winter 2017 collection?
TZ: As a graphic designer I’m very much drawn to geometric shapes. And mixed with my Iranian heritage, it really inspired the colours, shapes and metal fittings I used in my current collection. I wanted to create some sleek and elegant with a bit of edge.

HBA: What is it about Iran that inspires you?
TZ: Everything from the people to the landscape to the food inspired me in some way, but what I’m really drawn to is the architecture. I love the shapes and colours of the palaces and the stunning mosques the tiles with beautiful symmetry and the strong design.

HBA: You’ve lived in both America and Paris but have Iranian roots. How do you bridge the gap between these places in your designs?
TZ: I take inspiration from the geometry, colours and shapes of Iran and interpret them in a very modern and Western way.

HBA: You’ve just been picked up by Net-a-Porter for next season. Tell us a bit about what to expect from your SS18 collection.
TZ: I’m introducing a new range of colours in a suede fabric, which are inspired by my wedding in Puglia. Suede is having a serious sartorial moment, so I think they’re going to do very well!
