While Angelina may have opened its doors at the Dubai Mall in 2014 (it also has an outlet in Yas Mall), its subdued presence has proven popular with a crowd that no doubt stops by for Angelina’s hot chocolate (for advanced chocolate lovers) or wealth of sweets and pastries – also not for the sugar novice. With a façade and interior decked out to recall old-school Parisian tearooms with a notably historied feel, it has a remarkably quiet atmosphere despite being in the centre of a mall intersection. Service is friendly, the interior is homey in a comforting, slightly grandmotherly way, and it is an ideal spot to recoup some energy (including a sugar boost), indulge in a little people watching and for just a moment, forget that you are in the midst of a nearly constantly packed mall.
Offering a seasonal menu for some savory variation, including Crab Ravioli with experimental foam, sea bass or Béchamel-rich Croque Madame, there is also a brunch offering that sees eggs benedict flying out of the kitchen. However, the outlet established in 1903 in Paris is best visited for what it has made its name with: its sweets paired with coffee – it doesn’t need to prove anything more than that. Think the classic Paris New York chou pastry, the praline, almond and chocolate Opera, or any of its new slightly tart raspberry confections. But if you really have a hankering for something a little more on the salty side, opt for their Smoked Salmon or their Foie gras Terrine – simple fare that doesn’t interfere with the kitchen focusing its talents on the vast pastry offerings.
Angelina, whether their seasonal menu or their selection of classics, is not a venue that may not be to everyone’s taste, but has honed a distinct flavor profile that has clearly been over a century in the making.
