Attracting the attention of collectors and art connoisseurs from all over the globe, the eponymous Galerie Maria Behnam-Bakhtiar in Monte-Carlo is the first-of-its-kind in the Principality of Monaco. Founded by Maria Behnam-Bakhtiar, the contemporary and modern art gallery serves to connect emerging and established artists. Spread across two floors, the design of the space complements and highlights the artworks and objects on display. “We kept the design and architecture of the space open, minimal and ‘épuré’ to ensure that nothing interferes with the works on display,” says Maria.
“The gallery is conveniently located in Monte-Carlo, steps away from the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (Villa Sauber) as well as the Grimaldi Forum, which hosts the annual artmonte-carlo fair making our gallery a wonderful stop on the route of the local and visiting art lovers.” Maria has been involved in the international art scene since 2009 and has hosted multiple non-profit functions in support of the arts in the unique peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in France. She has also been recognised as one of the most inspirational art patrons in the region.
The brand new gallery will exhibit and represent a roster of select international established and emerging artists, whose works will be showcased locally in Monaco as well as internationally, serving as a cultural outlet for artists, curators and collectors alike. The opening exhibition at Galerie Maria Behnam-Bakhtiar entitled Human Being, Being Human will feature the works of Los Angeles-based artist Farzad Kohan, marking the artist’s first solo show in Monaco. Through his uplifting work, Kohan explores human experience through themes of love, kindness and identity, which have been inspired by his personal memories and surroundings. By a unique artistic process, he creates built-up yet weathered surfaces that are at once chaotic and methodical with English or Farsi scripts incorporated throughout the work. As a result, allusion to the passage of time, gradual transformations and hidden stories are found in the tactile details of his treated canvases through which he describes moments of realisations as well as longing and desire for an evolved positive state. The colours and textured surfaces of the works highlight sensations of humanity.
“Besides our original programming, it was very important for me to ensure that the gallery is a platform that inspires change and highlights the importance of social responsibility,” shares Maria. “Therefore, every exhibition we do has a philanthropic edge where a portion of the proceeds goes to selected organisations who are trying to make this world a better place.” Galerie Maria Behnam-Bakhtiar also runs its own publishing house which produces books and catalogues to accompany its exhibitions, inviting curators and writers to collaborate.
Human Being, Being Human by Farzad Kohan will run from 6 December 2019 to 4 March 2020 at Galerie Maria Behnam-Bakhtiar
