Have you ever wondered what’s the one product one of Dubai’s biggest beauty and fragrance experts can’t live without? Or the reason behind her gorgeous glossy locks? Here, Mona Kattan shares her tips, tricks and biggest beauty secrets…

MAKE-UP & FRAGRANCE

Go-to make-up look for a special event? “I’m loving gilded eyeshadow right now — whether it’s a soft wash of metallic shadow or heavy metals on the lids. I’m currently using our new Huda Beauty Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette (Dhs278).”

Best mascara? “Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara by Marc Jacobs (Dhs140) is one of my staples. I’ve been using this mascara for years and it gives me super bold-clump-free lashes.”

Favourite foundation? “I wear Huda Beauty foundation and concealer because they give me even coverage that lasts throughout the day. With our #FauxFilter Foundation (Dhs195), I’m shade Amaretti and for Overachiever Concealer I wear Sugar Biscuit.”

Can’t-live-without product? “Neutrogena Make-Up Remover Cleansing Wipes. They make my whole evening skin routine easier. I use one before I cleanse and tone my skin.”

Favourite lip colour? “Something that is a little deeper than my natural lip is what I typically go for. My go-to Huda Beauty Power Bullet shade is Interview (Dhs115).”

Secret beauty hack? “I love to use coconut oil to remove my eye make-up. It’s so soft and works really well.”

Your first fragrance memory? “I remember when I was younger my mum had this really beautiful jasmine-scented perfume that she’d always wear. It wasn’t anything expensive, but I always remember that smell and I associate it with her every time I smell jasmine.”

Tip for selecting a wedding day fragrance? “Sample, sample, sample. Choosing your fragrance for your wedding day is like choosing your dress. It’s super personal and when you know, you know.”

How do you make perfume last throughout the day? “Vaseline (Dhs20) or moisturiser. It provides the perfect base to extend the life of your favourite scent. Apply it to any area that you would spray perfume and then spritz your favourite scent over the top. I always put it on the back of my knees, my wrists and my neck. It’ll last for hours.”

Current signature scent? “I have been wearing our newest KAYALI fragrance that launches in 2020, almost every day. I sometimes layer it with some of my other fragrances to switch it up, but I can’t share much more otherwise I’ll give it away! Watch this space.”

How many fragrances do you own? “I own over 1,500 fragrances.”

Best way to store perfume? “I have a perfume closet in my home, and it’s filled with shelves that I store the bottles on. The room is also temperature controlled so the juices are kept in their best state. You should never store perfume in a hot room or in direct sunlight, otherwise the heat and sun can weaken the quality of it.”

Favourite candle? “That’s a tough one — I love rich, oud scents but also love soft, floral scents. It depends on my mood. If I had to pick a brand, I really love a lot of the candles from Diptyque (Dhs246), Byredo and Fornasetti Profumi.”

HAIR

Go-to hairstylist? “I use a couple of different hairstylists depending on what I’m doing and where I’m going. For big shoots and events, I typically work with Eduardo Bravo who is based in Dubai, and Dominic Seely who is based in London. For day-to-day hair styling, I work with Sandra or Sonia from Belle Femme Beauty Boutique & Spa, Dubai. They are all so amazing and are constantly in and out of our office!”

Hair schedule? “I’m really religious with my hair care even though it’s kind of basic. I take care of it consistently with regularly scheduled trims. I actually have a lot of grey hairs and Huda recommended a Japanese hair care brand on Amazon called Bigen. It’s a Dhs20 hair colour and it’s amazing. Ever since I started using it instead of my normal hair colour my hair has gotten a lot thicker - whereas before it was falling out from all the dye.”

Hair secret? “I take Sugar Bear Hair Vitamins (Dhs129). I know a lot of people are sceptical, but it’s made my hair grow so fast. I’m also super careful and don’t over-style my hair.”

Signature style for a special occasion? “This always depends on what I’m wearing but this year I’ve loved old Hollywood waves, so you’ll definitely see my hair like that in photos from a few special occasions!”

Off-duty look? “My hair is typically down and blown out.”

Bad hair day secret? “I wear a really fun headband and throw my hair into a bun to make it look like I was trying to style it even if my hair isn’t working with me that day.”

SKIN & BODY

What’s your skincare routine? “I typically remove my make-up with a wipe or Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. Then I cleanse my face with soap and water or Tatcha The Deep Cleanse. In the mornings, I apply Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum and Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer before applying my make-up. At night, after I cleanse I apply The Rose Mist by MDNA along with Shiffa Beauty’s Rose Maroc Night Elixir. This combo is my favourite. I finish by applying Shiseido Bio-Performance to the under eye along with Guerlain moisturiser.”

Go-to for skin emergencies? “Shiseido Bio-Performance Glow Revival Eye Treatment is unreal. It’s actually one of the first beauty products I ever bought, and I’ve been using it for the last 14 years.”

Favourite moisturiser? “I love the Guerlain Orchidee Imperiale Imperial Oil. It’s super moisturising without making you feel oily or greasy. I have been using the range for so long. I actually went to Switzerland and learned the science behind the orchids they use in this product. They put so much effort into their entire range and I really respect them for it.”

Favourite cleanser? “Tatcha’s The Deep Cleanse. Both Huda and I really like it.”

Go-to nail colour for special occasions? “I sometimes use stick-on nails for special occasions because they are easier, and then I don’t have to get my nails done as often. It’s also because I typically choose really bright and crazy colours like neon yellow or rainbow for my everyday looks. Bright nails just make everything a little happier and more fun.”

INTERVENTION

What’s your attitude towards injectables? “I personally think ‘to each their own.’ If someone wants to explore with injections they should be able to without judgement. My only advice is to do lots of research both on your doctor and the tools and products they use. As long as you do your homework, I see no problem with it.”

Cosmetic dermatologist? “I use Dr. Marta, based in Dubai, who is absolutely amazing. I couldn’t recommend her enough.”

DIET & FITNESS

How do you get in shape for a special event? “I live a healthy lifestyle all year round so I don’t really do anything different before a special event. I wake up at 5 or 6am every morning for my workouts in my home gym with my trainer. The workout varies day to day depending on what we’re focusing on — glutes, arms, cardio, etc.”

Go-to healthy snack: “Assorted berries, cucumbers or cashews. I’m on Keto so these are my go-tos.”
