They may be mother and daughter, but to hear Aisha Suresh Miranda and Jannat Miranda talk, it becomes very clear that they’re also the best of friends.

“Every little thing she tells me is great advice,” Jannat says of her mum. “I have learnt from her to value and preserve every object that I have been blessed to possess.”

Likewise, Aisha, who is managing director of the family’s interior design business, Decolab, takes her maternal role very seriously. “I’m fiercely protective of my children and I will push myself to any extent to love, protect and stand by them.”

Living and working together can sometimes be a tough gig, but for this mother-daughter duo, it not only works, it strengthens their bond. “Each and every moment I spend with my parents, or even away from them, reminds me how much I love and respect them,” says Jannat, 24. “I have learned to work hard every moment while not taking anything for granted. I feel blessed for the beautiful life that I have.”

While Aisha lists Queen Rania and Angelina Jolie as her style icons, not only for their fashion choices, but “because they embody the perfect balance between being a mother and a woman of the world,” Jannat’s icon is a lot closer to home. “My mother,” she says emphatically. “As a child, I would always lurk around my mother while she got ready, and I always remember being absolutely stunned every time she stepped out.”

It’s touching to know that Jannat’s admiration for her mother mirrors Aisha’s adoration of her own mother, Jannat’s grandmother. “She has always been a tough task master and my greatest critic and hero,” Aisha muses. “To date, she has an opinion on what I wear. She is my best friend, my philosopher, and my guide. I never spend a day without speaking to her, even if either of us are travelling.” It’s fitting then, that Jannat already has her advice for her future daughter penned out, “I’ll tell her to never be someone she isn’t comfortable being and that personal style is something that will shine through your personality and eventually the way you carry yourself.”
