Harper’s Bazaar Arabia: What was the inspiration behind these pieces?
Zayan: This collection is a continuation from our autumn/winter 17 collection which was based on Maria Luisa Casati, whose eccentric fashion sense and experimental style have been an inspiration for many artists and designers. The embellished tulle details, dramatic bell sleeves, warm winter colour pallet and pearl collars are a nod to her extraordinary style.
HBA: How many pieces are in the collection?
Z: The collection this year has 11 pieces, each catering to a different style, from a-line, floor length dresses to a two-in-one lace kaftan, to a beautiful, modern take on the classic shirt dress.
HBA: Any favourite pieces from the collection?
Z: For me, the gorgeous black and white contrast kaftan is definitely a stand-out piece. It’s a simple statement look, with its gorgeous waterfall lace tulle sleeves in a woodland print and its beautiful pearl tassel collar. I also love the contrast belt and the depth it adds to the overall piece. Our Dai Kaftan, a signature style that comes back by popular demand every season, is also a key piece for this capsule collection. But this year it’s been reinvented in a warm, burgundy hue embellished with beautiful rosebud embroideries.
HBA: How is this Ramadan collection different from your collection last year?
Z: It’s a bigger collection and we are catering to more shapes this year. The longer dresses and kaftans can also be worn after Ramadan in different ways, and the shirt kaftan can also be worn open as an abaya, so there’s a lot of focus on versatility with this collection.
HBA: You always create such beautiful dresses, do you think you’d ever create a Ramadan collection with trousers and separates?
Z: Yes that’s exactly what we plan on doing! Ramadan has become such an important part of our collections that it’s definitely gone beyond the kaftan.
HBA: When can we get our hands on the pieces?
Z: The kaftans will be in store at the beginning of Ramadan.
