Interview: Megan Hess On Why She Can’t Get Enough Of Abu Dhabi

Back in May, one of fashion’s most notable illustrators collaborated with The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, to sketch their latest advertising campaign. Fast-forward six months and Megan Hess has teamed up with the capital’s luxury shopping and dining destination for a second installment of stunning illustations. We caught up with the Aussie artist and former House of Bazaar special guest to talk about her latest project in the Middle East...

Harper’s Bazaar Arabia: What do you love most about coming back to the UAE?
Megan Hess: I’ve been travelling to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for seven years now and I’ve fallen in love with them. I’ve created a lot of friendships and have a lot of clients here now. Every time I come, I can’t wait to have a cup of coffee and some Middle Eastern dates.

HBA: What is it about The Galleria that inspires you?
MH: The Galleria has so much inspiration to draw from, and as a fashion illustrator that is something that I’m always looking for. The mall has such an incredible mix of luxury fashion and incredible dining - these are my two favorite things, fashion and great food.

HBA: Your last drawing used a lot of gold and cream tones, this season we’re seeing more pink. What was the inspiration behind the sketches?
MH: We highlighted pieces from lots of current collections that boast a lot of pinks, magentas, reds, and peaches. I wanted to really capture a group of chic women, who were having the ultimate day of shopping and just spending time together within The Galleria. As the day comes to an end, they end up in the beautiful dining area together, which is kind of my dream day.

HBA: Five must-visit shops in The Galleria?
MH: For fashion I’ll head straight to Dior, Prada and Louis Vuitton, before having a cup of coffee at Godiva and a cupcake from Magnolia Bakery.

HBA: When can we expect you back in the UAE?
MH: I’m hoping to be back in early 2019 for the Emirates Literature festival!
