It may be nearing the end of October, but the Middle Eastern’s perennial sun is going nowhere. A good pair of shades are a sartorial prerequisite in the desert heat, so when luxury eyewear label glassing arrived in the UAE last year, we welcomed them with open, err, eyes. Afterall, who does love a new pair of sunnies?

Frequently worn by Anna Dello Russo, Kate Moss, Rihanna, Kourtney Kardashian and more, Bazaar caught up with Alessandro Forte and Stefano Ottone, the founders of Glassing.

Harper's Bazaar Arabia (HBA): How did you meet?
Alessandro Forte and Stefano Ottone (A + S): We have been friends for 20 years. We met at school and decided to go into business together. It started with selling vintage sunglasses in Ibiza for fun (really it was just to justify our trips to Ibiza to our parents), but our little pop-up did so well that eventually we decided to turn it into a full-fledged business.

HBA: Why did you get into the world of sunglasses?
A + S: We love the sunglasses, they are a part of our daily lives. Plus, Italy is the largest producer of spectacles in the world, so it felt like a natural, organic move.

HBA: What inspires you?
A + S: Travel. The more you discover new things, the more inspiration comes to you.

HBA: Which celebrities were you most excited to see wearing your designs?
A + S: Justin Beiber, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kate Moss.

HBA: How many pairs of sunglasses do you each of you own?
A + S: We each have hundreds of glasses each. And with Italy being a fashion capital of the world, our collections are showing no sign of slowing down.

HBA: Do you have a favourite pair from the collection?
A + S: The Base collection and the GP collection.

HBA: You’re soon to open your third shop in Dubai, is that right?
A + S: Following the success of our pop-up in JBR last year and our second store in City Walk, we have found an increased demand for more sunglasses! So we are incredibly excited to be opening our third retail space at Dubai’s newest beach club La Mer.

HBA: Do you plan to expand to other countries in the region?
A + S: Yes! We are coming to Kuwait, Saudi and Lebanon very soon. Watch this space.
