From flexible tubogas chokers to designs bursting with colour, Bulgari is known for its instantly recognisable statement jewels and timepieces. Its emblematic Serpenti watch has been reinvented once again, this time adopting a new expression with double wrap-around straps crafted from multicolour exotic leathers.

Since the Serpenti motif was first adopted in the 1940s, Bulgari has continuously found new ways of adapting the style to suit any taste. Fabrizio Buonamassa, Bulgari’s Chief Watch Designer, told Harper’s Bazaar Arabia that his latest take on the design started with sketches exploring new ways the watch could be worn. It was of upmost importance to him that he preserved the two key features of the Sepenti watch in any design – beauty and functionality.

Available in Bulgari’s worldwide boutiques from this month, the new Serpenti timepiece comes in more than 300 variations with clients able to choose their favorite style combination. Using a downloadable app, the watch’s case, dial, gem-setting and straps can be selected, alongside personalised engraving on the caseback.

The double straps are made from Karung, a non-venomous water snake with particularly thin and supple skin that requires a meticulous tanning process. Its luminous colours are then enhanced by a subtle gloss, creating a smooth finished strap that can be transformed in a heartbeat with easily interchangeable fastenings. Each watch comes with two straps – in Karung or calfskin – but the client can choose her own colour combination, with further straps available at Bulgari boutiques.

For Fabrizio, this ability to create an almost completely unique watch is essential for today’s Bulgari collector, particularly in the Middle East where he sees a wide range of tastes and choice. Similar to a serpent continually shedding its skin and adopting another, the new Serpenti timepiece offers an iconic accessory that meets this demand for unique and transformable style.
