Chanel recently opened doors to its second watch and fine jewellery boutique in the new luxury wing of Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. The store, lavishly intimate like a boutique hotel, echoes Chanel’s classic and timeless appeal in its design by New York-based architect Peter Marino, who has been the creative force behind the French maison’s retail spaces for over two decades.
You enter the store that’s spread across 130 square metres, its black marble and light wood façade is inherently minimalist, through a glass door with the brand’s iconic fine jewellery and watches, such as the Plume de Chanel and Mademoiselle Privé Coromandel watch, in plain sight.
Marino seamlessly fuses works of art into his interiors, having commissioned over 300 site-specific artworks over his career. He does no less with this store, lacing it with contemporary artworks commissioned for Chanel along with bespoke furnishings and antique pieces.
'Coco Chanel' by Gregor Hildebrandt hangs in the space amid the brand's watches and fine jewellery creations
An artwork titled Coco Chanel by Gregor Hildebrandt decorates the pristine space, an evident nod to Gabrielle Chanel, whose Parisian townhouse Faubourg Saint-Honoré and apartment at 31, rue Cambon are the design inspirations behind the store. Two customised rock crystal and gilt bronze chandeliers by Parisian brand Goossens dress the gallery that showcases fine jewellery collections including Coco Crush, Monsieur de Chanel and Première Boy watches.
The store also houses a VIP room replete with antiques such as a sumptuously carved Miroir aux Griffon’s regency-style French mirror, and a Louis XV fireplace with a mantel made of Paris stone. There are ivory-coloured screens on both sides of the fireplace with gilded resin gestures. Goossens crystal table lamps and a coffee table by designer-sculptor Ingrid Donat round off the ethereal space.
In keeping with the store’s stately aura, the fine jewellery salon that’s dedicated to a selection of the brand’s jewellery pieces and watches such as the J12 and Première Boy, also features a regency-style antique French Miroir au Buste d’Enfant. For its decadent collections and dreamy interior, the new Chanel outpost merits a visit.
