Like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, there comes a time in every child's life when mermaids cease to be magical beings and get delegated to Disney diversions. Now, thanks to the Mermaids of Arabia experience at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, you can banish their doubts for good. Until May 13 a team of three mermaids (they are actually world record holding free divers and performance artists, but no need to tell the kids that) will be braving the sharks in The Dubai Mall aquarium for a breath-taking (quite literally in the case of Marina Kazankova, who can stay underwater for over five minutes) performance.
To boost your children's excitement, book them in for a Mermaid Makeover, during which girls will be styled as mermaids and boys as pirates (or vice versa, should they prefer) in the magical tansformation area next to the aquarium, complete with shell-style make-up chairs and mirrors and a direct view of the marine life. Photo opps galore come courtesy of a shell throne and pirate ship, complete with polystyrene cannon balls, pearls and sea horses.
While my mini-mermaid refused the make-over (let's hope this adversion to make-up lasts into her teens...), she loved wearing the life-like tail, which is fitted with a solid monofin for waving around to her heart's content. Ariel eat your heart out.
Mermaid Makeovers take place from 11am to 10pm on weekends and from 11am to 9pm during the week until July 1 and cost Dhs200, including a 45-minute makeover, hair accessory and photo opportunity and include Researcher access to Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo.
