Experience a relaxing getaway in Sri Lanka

The Escape | Taru Villas – Mawella Tangalle, Sri Lanka
The pool house offers a secluded hideaway

Commencing the 90-minute journey from Mattala Rajapaksa airport through the picturesque Hambantota District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka’s south coast was a panoramic vision of undisturbed beauty. As we arrived at Taru Villas Mawella, nestled at the end of a private sandy road and one of eight luxury villas dotted around the island by the boutique travel group, we were greeted by an abundance of welcoming smiles, followed by the just-as-welcome stylish, minimalistic design – a breath of fresh air for the sophisticated, modern visitor.

The garden & main house

The secluded setting is located on Mawella’s tranquil, untouched beachfront, away from the hustle and bustle of the town and almost no tourists in sight – just a rare glimpse of a local or fisherman going about their day in tropical paradise.

The property’s idyllic surroundings are natural gems, offering up the option of laying on the unspoilt beach or swaying in the hammock under a palm tree in the lush, exotic garden. When evening falls, watch the mesmerising sunset from the villa terrace, take a late-night dip in the pool and commit to ultimate relaxation by settling down with a book in the spacious living area.

With just four en-suite double rooms in the main villa, and two suites in the pool house, the stay was an intimate and refreshing experience compared to staying in a busy, hotel chain and was our own private paradise. Signature breakfast was included, and our private chef (one of the best on the island) delivered the freshest traditional and European-style dishes at our leisure, from a freshly-caught seafood lunch enjoyed overlooking the pristine shores, to a fragrant gourmet dinner in the main villa dining room. Great food was at the forefront of the stay, making for an immersive five-star dining experience that was a highlight throughout.

For those looking to explore the island’s culture further, the staff at Taru were happy to arrange visits to areas around Mawella beach, offering a multitude of activities from whale-watching and safaris, to exploring the vibrant town. It’s the perfect hideaway for those wanting to escape the UAE for a blissful long weekend, honeymoon or even a family holiday – just be prepared for a perfectly magical stay you’ll never want to leave, and certainly won’t forget.
