Played under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Cartier hosted its celebrated Dubai polo tournament in December for the first time yesterday. Four international teams, featuring players from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Europe and Argentina, played a week of league matches in a bid to reach Saturday’s final, before an 8-4 win for Desert Palm, featuring Tariq Albwardy and Rashid Al Habtoor, concluded today. Their valiant opponents today were Habtoor Polo, headed up by Rashid’s brother Mohammed Al Habtoor and Stuart Wrigley. A beautifully executed day of firsts, it also saw two of Dubai’s leading polo playing families – the Albwardys and the Al Habtoors – teaming up together in one team, something that has never happened before in the tournament’s 10-year history.
