Ruchika Chani

Ruchika Chani recently discovered something new about her style. “I was trying to find a solid, block colour dress in my wardrobe and I realised I am a colourful print addict,” she tells Bazaar. “I tend to gravitate to florals, stripes and patterns and I love mixing them.”

And it’s this approach that is also behind her label Chuchumai, a nickname her father gave her when she was young that means ‘a woman that makes a lot of noise’. “I design handbags and lifestyle products and I source handmade fabrics from villages all around the world to support local communities and women.”

Her father was in the fashion industry so she grew up “spending summers at his factories and learning the creative process of how garments are made” and from a young age, the designer says she was insistent on her style. “As soon as I could speak, I was vocal about what
I wanted to wear. My mother would have to chase me around the house to dress me if I didn’t like what she chose for me. I was opinionated and knew what I liked very early on.”

Though she learnt a thing or two along the way. “Let’s just say I will never match my eyeshadow to my dress ever again... can anyone say ‘Kermit the Frog?’”

A woman after our own hearts, Ruchika says her wish list for spring/summer is “anything in the Zimmermann collection – it’s so effortless and chic” alongside pieces from her favourite designers. “I like Chloé because the flowy, feminine dresses are summer favourites, Stella McCartney for her perfectly structured-but-comfortable cuts, Gucci for its fur-lined slippers, Dodo Bar Or is perfect for any occasion and Sacai is the coolest, I love how they mix fabrics and different texture combinations.”

London, Paris and New York are her favourite destinations “because the selection is outstanding and there are always new designers popping up.” But when not working or shopping, Ruchika likes to relax and enjoy any rare downtime with her husband. “When we manage to get the time, my husband and I love to have a series marathon on Netflix. Popcorn please!”
