Super Bowl Style: The Best In Fashion From Game Day
A crystal couture jacket, exquisite headpieces, and more; the dressing was on point for one of the biggest sporting events of the year
In a game of word association Super Bowl is synonymous with hot wings, game day parties and lots of cheering; it’s the only time of year fashion and American football cross paths (unless you’re referring to power couple Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, of course.) And that happens during the hotly-anticipated halftime show, when A-List talent – often at the height of their careers – have the opportunity to perform for millions.
Here, Bazaar takes a look at some of the biggest style moments from this year’s Super Bowl LV.
The Woman In Stripes
While she didn’t mean an official appearance on stage at the halftime show, one woman was looking ever so sharp in her black-and-white striped uniform. Sarah Thomas made NFL history as she became the first female referee to officiate a Super Bowl.
Being the only female referee in the league, she shared her thoughts and excitement via the NFL’s official website. “It’s just so meaningful,” Sarah said. “I never set out to be the first in any of this, but knowing the impact that I’m having on not just my daughter but young girls everywhere, women everywhere, when I get on that field, and I take it all in, I know that I’m probably going to get a little teary-eyed. It’s just remarkable, and I’m truly honored and humbled to be a part of this year’s Super Bowl crew.”
Slick, Low Ponytails Are Making A Comeback
Game day entertainers H.E.R. and Jazmine Sullivan were both seen sporting low ponytails throughout each of their performances. While Jazmine accentuated hers with an eye-catching headpiece, H.E.R. opted for a simpler version.
Poets Are The New Pop Stars
The 22-year-old National Youth Poet Laureate performed “Chorus of the Captains,” making her the first-ever poet to perform at the championship. The poem celebrated three frontline workers: an educator, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, and an intensive care nurse. Each were in attendance and named honorary captains in the coin toss.
While delivering her poem at one of the most watched events of the year, she wore a blue Moschino coat with bold rhinestone trim and finishing off the look with dreamy pearl tiara.
“Poetry at the Super Bowl is a feat for art & our country, because it means we’re thinking imaginatively about human connection even when we feel siloed,” Gorman tweeted before she performed. “I also can’t reiterate how exciting it is for me that others are excited to see poetry at a football game. What a time to be alive,” she said.
All About The Bedazzle…
From Miley Cyrus’ Tailgate TikTok concert in a bedazzled pink, black, and cream-coloured football uniform to The Weeknd’s custom Givenchy suit jacket, performers were bringing their A-Game when it to amping up the crowd in style. According to Givenchy, Creative Director Matthew M. William created the custom crystal jacket with the help of the French fashion house’s Haute Couture atelier in Paris — which required four embroiderers and more than 250 hours to complete. When it came to his shoes, the Canadian pop star opted for a pair of black-and-white oxfords.
Hair Accessories Galore
If 2020 was the year of the mask, perhaps 2021 will be the year of the hat…
Alicia Keys opened the show with an emotional performance of “Lift Every Voice And Sing” — and the pillbox hat she wore on top of her braid was simple, striking and elegant in the best of ways.
While reminiscing of Super Bowls past was inevitable throughout the duration of the game, it’s incredible to think back on just how much change has occurred in one year later. If the 2021 Super Bowl is any indicator for the future, then the message of hope can make us believe that by the 56th, it will all be different too. But Amanda Gorman said it best; in her poem, she stated “…even in tragedy, hope is possible.”
