A spectacular evening of unmatched drama and joy— The Oscars at its best

The 97th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles last night, and delivered plenty of newsworthy moments. Fashion and film’s biggest night delivered poignant speeches, surprise victories, heartfelt tributes and show-stopping performances. Here are the best highlights from this year’s Academy Awards.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande defying gravity

The Wicked queens opened the night with a hair-raising medley performance of songs from the hit movie, with gowns as sublime as their voices.

‘No Other Land’s emotional win

The Palestinian-Israeli film won best documentary feature film, spotlighting an unlikely friendship between Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli investigative journalist. Basel gave an emotional acceptance speech addressing the current conflict, calling for another way forward for both his and Yuval’s people.

Anora sweeps the board

Sean Baker’s film Anora made history with five wins for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. The film’s lead actress Mikey Madison walked away with Best Actress, a surprising win over tipped favourite Demi Moore.

I’m Still Here receives a standing ovation

Brazilian movie I’m Still Here won Best International Feature and received an incredible standing ovation from the crowd. The film tackles the struggles of a family facing the country’s brutal military dictatorship in the 1970’s, and was the first Brazilian film ever to take home the award.

The James Bond tribute

Margaret Qualley, Lisa, Raye and Doja Cat joined forces to tip their hat to the James Bond franchise, leading to speculation that Margaret may be the next Bond girl waiting in the wings. LISA became the first K-pop act to perform at the Oscars with a rendition of Live and Let Die, while Doja Cat reinterpreted Shirley Bassey’s iconic Diamonds Are Forever.

Adrien Brody’s Best Actor speech

Despite the Academy attempting to cut Adrien Brody’s five minute speech off several times with a musical interlude, the two-time Oscar winning actor stayed on point and refused to cut his moment short, saying, “Please turn the music off, I’ve done this before,” with a dry laugh to the crowd.

Love was in the air

There were many supportive partners in attendance at the awards ceremony last night, delivering plenty of PDA moments. Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater were a noticeable highlight, while Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, and Emma Stone and Dave McCary were also turning heads.

Adam Sandler’s ‘glam’ outfit for the night

The actor made a surprise appearance at the Oscars in his signature ensemble– a hoodie and basketball shorts. His choice of attire caught the eye of the host of the night Conan O’Brien, who asked, “Adam, what are you wearing?” which led to a spoof believed to reference the Trump-Zelenskyy Oval Office showdown.
