Empowering Qatari Mothers: New Policy Grants Reduced Working Hours for Women in Government

Balancing motherhood and career, Qatar sets a new precedent in celebrating women.

In a significant step toward supporting working mothers, the Council of Ministers in Qatar has approved a proposal that allows reduced working hours for Qatari women — and women raising Qatari children — employed in government roles.

Announced on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the initiative was put forward by the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau and reflects Qatar’s broader commitment to strengthening family life and promoting gender balance in the workplace.

Under the new policy, eligible female employees can leave work two hours early during key academic periods — such as mid-term breaks and examination weeks — helping them better support their children during critical times of the school year. While roles requiring full-time presence are excluded, the policy overall represents a thoughtful move toward more flexible, family-friendly work environments.

This decision follows a successful pilot program and marks a meaningful moment in the country’s ongoing efforts to empower women, recognise their dual roles, and make professional life more compatible with family responsibilities. It’s a win for working mothers — and for every step toward greater balance and support for women in the workforce.
