Le Birkin Voyageur: Another Of Jane Birkin’s Personal Hermès Bags To Appear In Abu Dhabi Auction
Jane Birkin’s Hermès “Le Birkin Voyageur”—a symbol of effortless allure and ultimate rarity—heads to Abu Dhabi to make auction history once again…
In the world of luxury handbags, few names resonate as profoundly as Hermès Birkin. Yet behind the legend stands a muse whose personal story is woven into the very fabric of this iconic accessory: Jane Birkin.
This December, one of only four Birkin handbags ever owned by the actress—and a deeply intimate piece of her legacy—will be unveiled at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week, an exclusive programme of auctions, masterclasses, panel discussions, and exhibitions, presented in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

Le Birkin Voyageur is far more than just a handbag. Gifted to Birkin by Hermès after she sold her original prototype Birkin bag in 1994 to raise funds for AIDS charities, this classic black box leather model accompanied the actress from 2003 to 2007. Measuring 40 cm wide, it features a rare design hallmark—the closed bridges fastening system—that pays homage to the original prototype’s exclusive details.
But what truly sets this piece apart are the handwritten notes and drawings Jane Birkin inscribed inside its pockets. In shimmering silver ink, she penned “My Birkin bag” alongside her signature, “Jane B.” Even more personal are her delicate sketches, filled with Birkin’s playful spirit. The most poignant inscription reads, “Mon Birkin bag qui m’a accompagné dans le monde entier” (“My Birkin bag, my globetrotting companion”), inspiring the bag’s evocative nickname.

The significance of this auction follows the breathtaking record set earlier this year when Birkin’s original prototype fetched an unprecedented €8.6 million ($10.1 million) at Sotheby’s Paris—the highest price ever paid for a handbag at auction. That historic sale reignited global fervor for Hermès Birkins, but Le Birkin Voyageur offers a more intimate connection, revealing the woman behind the legend.
Sotheby’s Global Head of Handbags and Fashion, Morgane Halimi, reflects on the momentous occasion: “To present not one, but two of Jane Birkin’s personal Hermès bags in a single year is extraordinary. Le Birkin Voyageur is not simply a luxury item—it’s a deeply personal artifact from an enduring cultural and style icon whose influence transcends fashion.”

Set against the stunning backdrop of the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week will run from December 2 to 5 and feature a curated programme of auctions, masterclasses, panel discussions, and exhibitions. The auction of Le Birkin Voyageur is scheduled for December 5, with an estimated value of $240,000 to $440,000.
For collectors and admirers alike, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a piece of Birkin’s personal journey—a handbag that has been loved, worn, and transformed into a canvas of memories. As the legend of Jane Birkin and her Hermès Birkins continues to inspire, Le Birkin Voyageur stands as a testament to timeless style infused with heart and history.
