Remembering Thierry Mugler: The French Fashion Designer Has Passed Away From “Natural Causes”
The 73-year-old creative mastermind died on Sunday, according to a statement shared on his official Instagram account
French fashion designer, perfumer and creative director Manfred Thierry Mugler passed away yesterday.
The heart-breaking news was announced in the early hours of Monday morning, with a statement on his official Instagram account that read “#RIP We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace.”
According to the NY Times two of the designer’s close friends confirmed the death; The Guardian reports that he died from “natural causes,” according to his agent.
He was best-loved for his play on the female form and known for exaggerating silhouettes, sending models down the catwalk in sensual, waist-cinching creations throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Having recently dressed the likes Beyoncé, Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Irina Shayk, and more his work was reintroduced to a new generation when Kim Kardashian stepped out at the 2019 Met Gala in a nude latex Mugler dress, famously known as the “wet look.”
Several industry insiders and friends have shared their grievances online, such as American singer Diana Ross, supermodel Irina Shayk, and many more.
The popular model and actress shared an emotional post that mentions, “Gone to soon ??? God of fashion .. a rarely REAL, kindness , sweetest .. u ll be always missed by your Russian… @manfredthierrymugler.”
Global President Mugler Sandrine Groslier says, “It is with deep sadness and great emotion that I have just learned of the death of an extraordinary man. Manfred Thierry Mugler, with whom I have worked for over 27 years, has just passed away. A genius jack-of-all-trades, an artist for whom measurement was not part of his vocabulary . He marked the world of fashion and beauty forever. He was funny, passionate, crazy at times, and he always knew how to pay tribute with a lot of emotion to All women. I promised you an exhibition worthy of your genius in Paris. You have seen this immense Couturissime exhibition during your lifetime. You have reached the stars. Rest in peace Mr MUGLER.”
