Following the display of the installation during a collateral project at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2019, Poonawalla brings the work to Dubai alongside a strong programme of South Asian female artists at Alserkal Avenue

Born out of a sense of unease with the ways images of violence and displacement are consumed today in the media, Indian artist Michelle Poonawalla’s multimedia installation Introspection marks her first exhibition in Dubai and merges her experiments in digital technology with sound and visual art.

“I think of Introspection as a work that has a strong global resonance,” says the artist. “The work addresses our increased apathy with 24-hour news cycles, as people are confronted with images of disaster or violence we learn to move past them without giving them consideration.”

The work was first shown as part of a collateral project at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2018 and is now staged at Alserkal Avenue as part of a strong programme of South Asian art this March, including a collaborative exhibition Fabric(ated) Fractures with the Samdani Art Foundation, which opened at the OMA-designed space Concrete, Altered Inheritances: Home is a Foreign Place, the inaugural exhibition of the Dubai-based Ishara Art Foundation, showing the work of Shilpa Gupta and Zarina Hashmi, and Rana Begum, whose sculptural works are on display at The Third Line.

“After first showing it as a collateral project at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2018 I had wanted to show it outside India and Alserkal Avenue provides a fantastic opportunity to present it to a new global alongside a host of other great projects,” adds Poonawalla. “It is great to be showing my work alongside such an amazing group of South Asian women.”

For this evocative work, Poonawalla turned to sound, incorporating a combination of audio clips from newsreels and ambient sounds to create an otherworldly sensorium. Visitors immediately are immersed within the artist’s world, prompted to reflect on the subject matter at hand and hopefully, will leave, as the artist intends, with new ideas and a desire for change.

Introspection is on display at Warehouse 42
