MOHSEN GALLERY ‘UNTITLED’, MOJTABA AMINI
When tragedies loom, what does an artist do? Iranian artist Mojtaba Amini recalls the calamities that have befallen humans through his hard-hitting collages, drawings and installation that form the core of this show. Exploring harrowing realities through abstraction, he uses handmade paper and cardboard, materials otherwise deemed insignifi cant, to present the aftermath of critical issues such as warfare and mine workings. An artwork titled Black Death is marked ‘Zemestan-Yurt coal mine’, referencing the 2017 explosion in the area located in Iran’s Golestan Province that led to the deaths of 42 miners and left many more injured. In doing so, he immortalises these tragedies, leaving the viewer to piece together many nuances. An important show that’s at once unsettling and liberating.
