Simple and radiant is how best to describe the beauty look that Peter Philips created for the Dior cruise 2018 show earlier this month. The sunny California desert, where the collection was unveiled, provided the perfect backdrop for the streamlined and clean look. “I wanted to use the warm, organic, and earthy tones of the desert, just like in Georgia O'Keefe's paintings,” says Philips, referring to the late American painter who inspired Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. “I wanted a natural but slightly unpolished ‘warm glow’ effect, the way you look after physical activity. I used earthy and orangey colours so the girls looked like they had spent an afternoon in the sun and the wind.”
This seemingly low-maintenance look, however, required Philips’s customary arsenal of Dior Beauty products and his deft hand at creating the perfect look, sometimes by improvising in the backstage frenzy of the maison’s shows. “I first prepped the skin using Diorskin Forever & Ever Wear Primer, and then evened out the complexion with Diorskin Forever Fluid Foundation and Compact, as well as new Diorskin Forever Undercover Concealer,” explains Philips. “I wanted to create a luminous, very sun-kissed look that extends from the top of the cheekbones down towards the neck. To get this soft, warm tone, I used Rouge Dior Lipstick in Ready n°642 as blush, because its slightly earthy brick shade evokes the colours of the desert. The shows are like a laboratory, and playing with the products like this is typical of what happens backstage, where you take liberties to create specific effects. To finish, a touch of Flash Luminizer Radiance Booster Pen n°002 was applied to areas that catch the light and the look is finished with a light veil of Diorskin Nude Air Loose Powder.”
The eye and the lips required slightly less work as the emphasis was rather on the natural glow of the models’ complexion. Philips created the earth tone of the eyes by applying “a soft sweep of the brick shade from the 5 Couleurs palette Inflame n°767 to the centre of the eyelid. Lashes didn't need mascara, as the soft warmth of the colour opened the eye. Eyebrows were emphasized and precisely defined with Diorshow Brow Styler Universal Brown n°001.”
The finishing touch was the dewy mouth, which was polished with just one hero product: Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub.
