Is It Safe To Do Dermaplaning At Home? Everything You Need To Know Before Shaving Your Face
From some of the most frequently asked questions to pre-procedure prep, Bazaar chats to Dubai-based dermatologist Dr. Shadan Naji for expert insight into the treatment
Dermaplaning videos are so satisfying to watch YouTube, but actually taking a razor to one’s face can be quite… intimidating at best and a disaster at worst. While we’ve seen all our favourite beauty vloggers and influencers shaving their peace fuzz on camera from the comforts of their own home, we’ve decided to reach out to an expert for professional advice.
Bazaar spoke to Dr. Shadan Naji, a dermatologist at Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic in Dubai, who breaks down everything you need to know about the exfoliating treatment that promises to reduce signs of aging, remove dead skin and brighten your complexion.
Harper’s Bazaar Arabia (HBA): What is Dermaplaning?
Dr. Shadan Naji (SN): Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that uses a painless blade to gently remove dead skin cells and unwanted facial hair. Similar to exfoliation, the skin treatment aims to make your skin appear smoother and more radiant by scraping away the top skin layer on your face. The removal of dead skin cells also helps skin care products penetrate deeper into the skin.
HBA: Is it safe to do dermaplaning at home by myself?
Dr. SN: In my opinion, it is not safe to do this procedure at home by yourself as you might injure your skin. This could lead to serious irritation, as well as the onset of serious skin conditions.
HBA: What are some of the best dermaplaning tools?
Dr. SN: There are multiple types of disposable dermaplaning razors that are specifically designed for this purpose and the best types are usually available to buy in aesthetic clinics. Always seek a dermatologist’s advice on which tool would best suit your skin.
HBA: How should I prep my skin before dermaplaning?
Dr. SN: Make sure to deeply cleanse the skin before the procedure.
HBA: When will I see results after a dermaplaning procedure?
Dr. SN: You should see results in one to two days, such as smooth and hair-free skin.
HBA: Is there any down time after dermaplaning?
Dr. SN: Depending on your skin type, you will usually experience minor redness and some dryness post-treatment.
HBA: Will dermaplaning cause breakouts?
Dr. SN: Yes, it does, so it is not recommended for patients who suffer from acne.
HBA: Will dermaplaning make my hair grow back thicker?
Dr. SN: No, it will not, but if you have thick hair or hair of medium thickness, it is better to do a course of laser hair removal treatments.
HBA: What are the side effects of dermaplaning?
Dr. SN: Negative side effects can include infection, skin discoloration and irritation.
HBA: Who should avoid dermaplaning?
Dr. SN: Acne patients and patients who have very dry skin or any type of eczema on the skin.
HBA: How often do I need to dermaplane?
Dr. SN: Every two-four weeks.
