Meet The “Groundbreaking” Wearable Technology That Tracks Your UV Exposure

The tiny device, worn on your thumbnail, could make sun damage a thing of the past

We all know that SPF is central to healthy skin, but it can be hard to monitor exactly how good your sun care habits are.

With this in mind, the experts at L’Oreal have created a nifty wearable electronic sensor to measure individual UV exposure.

Named UV Sense, the tiny battery-free device designed to adhere to your thumbnail (and look like nail art, while receiving optimal sunlight) gives you instant updates about your exposure.

Linked to a mobile app, it tells you when you need to be mindful of sun exposure, spend time in the shade, or reapply sunscreen. While it centres on UV monitoring, it also allows you to track other environmental factors that affect your skin like pollution, humidity, and allergen levels.

Guive Balooch, global vice president of L’Oréal’s Research and Innovation Technology Incubator says, “we set out to create something that blends problem-solving technology with human-centred design, offering real-time data and longer wear in a discreet product that fits any lifestyle.” He explains the technology within UV Sense as “groundbreaking”, adding it “has so much potential to impact the future of technology and wearables.”
The only bad news is that it’s not on sale globally yet. There’s no price yet, either, but anything that solves the mystery of sun safety – plus much more – will surely be worth the spend. We’ll keep you posted.
