It seems that a manicure is not simply a manicure anymore. The trending Russian Manicure Method has taken up our Instagram feeds and Pinterest ‘Nail Inspo’ boards by storm and it is clear why.
If you have ever seen a picture of a neat and well-tended nail bed, more likely than not, there is a Russian Manicure expert behind it. And in a town where nail colour is part of an outfit and salons seemingly open overnight, we wanted to know what this treatment entailed and why we should be getting it?
What is a Russian Manicure?
Russian manicures, also called European or dry manicures, have gained favour for their gentle approach to nail care. The keystone of the service is the treatment of the cuticle, Russian manicures are performed on dry nails without soaking in water. Cuticle softeners are applied, and specialised tools gently push back and remove excess cuticles creating a long nail bed. This technique results in well-maintained, natural-looking nails and the results can last up to three weeks, far longer than a classic service.
The application of colour is the part of the process that takes the longest; the pigment is applied at the root of the nail bed to create Pinterest-level nail perfection. The results are almost too flawless. However, this technique remains controversial; if done by an inexperienced technician, it can be more damaging than good. Specifically, tending to the cuticle requires a level of training to avoid issues such as infection and a painful service- which this is not.
