It's the end of limp locks and oily scalps

Living in a region that's known for its extreme heat, it’s not exactly a secret that sun protection is key. But while we may slather on SPF50 on our face and bod, our hair and scalp can be overlooked. “Skipping on sun protection is one big beauty faux pas,” points out Aveda’s Dubai Master Stylist, Mette Vigand. “You know how important it is to wear sunscreen daily, but just like your skin, you can’t neglect your hair.”

The haircare expert notes that overlooking hair sun protection can result in a domino effect, with a day of sunbathing kicking off hair and scalp issues that can continue to plague you long after your tan lines have faded, with your locks facing environmental assaults daily during the summer months. “In the Middle East, humidity is definitely one of the biggest concerns, and along with water, salt, heat, and UV from the sun's rays, can leave hair dry, brittle, and if you have color-treated strands, also faded,” notes Mette. These environmental factors can all contribute to tresses in serious distress.

Need to send out a haircare SOS? We’ve identified the five major summer hair dramas you’re likely to encounter, and tasked Aveda’s Mette with trouble-shooting an easy solution for each, to keep your hair happy despite the sun, salt and sweat.

Aveda Sun Care Products

SOS: Extra crispy, dehydrated lengths
We all know how bad salt and chlorine water is for our hair, yet we still soak it in the sea and let it air dry in the sun. This results in UV-fried and weakened strands. By applying a dollop of Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil all over your hair before exposing it to the sun, it will leave a layer of water-resistant and lightweight UV protection that will last you throughout the day. No matter how much we protect our hair, external elements will always still slightly dry out your hair, leaving it matte and lifeless. Combat this by applying Aveda’s After Sun Hair Masque post-shampoo and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing. You should see results immediately.

SOS: Fine hair that’s limp and lifeless
Fine hair tends to not get so much moisture as those who have is tend to use products with a focus on creating volume. Remember to do a rebuilding masque, like Aveda Damage Remedy Intense Restructuring Treatment once a week, along with Aveda’s soft cleansing Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo that will still create body and volume using kaolin clay and acacia gum, without drying.

SOS: Textured hair that’s gone haywire
The region’s humidity levels means it’s close to impossible keeping wavy, textured hair smooth in the summer without a little help. My best trick is to tame the tresses and relax the wave so it falls beautifully. Use Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo, Conditioner and Masque in your hair wash routine; use the masque once a week for at least 15 minutes. With ingredients including aloe vera, cupuaçu and shea butter, it seals in moisture and locks out frizz, leaving your hair smooth and with natural movement.

SOS: Thick curls that are full of frizz
Curly and thick hair demands moisture, moisture and moisture to keep it from frizzing up! Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner with no sulfates like the Aveda Dry Remedy duo. Leave-in treatments and oils are your best friend throughout the whole year, but especially during summer when the hair gets drier and exposed to the elements. Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil with organic buriti nut oil is a must to apply every day, even several times a day, whenever the hair feels dry. Keep it in your purse to always be able to rehydrate your hair when needed with a quick spritz.

SOS: Oily locks and a greasy scalp
Oily hair comes from over-washing – easy to do when it’s so hot – or simply a mineral and silicone build-up on your hair and scalp. Use a mild cleanser like Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo so that the peppermint and rosemary essential oils can balance out your scalp, avoiding the over-production of sebum that leaves the hair flat and greasy. Always use a lightweight conditioner like Rosemary Mint Conditioner so the pH levels in your hair are restored. Switch out your shampoo once a week with Aveda Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser, to deeply cleanse and purify the scalp to balance sebum levels, and exfoliate to remove pollution and build-up.
