Harper's Bazaar Arabia: What were your inspirations when sketching the images for this collection?
Konstantin Kakanias: NARS invited me to an imaginary weekend in the south of France with François Nars photographing beautiful girls. I tried to imagine the whole situation and capture special moments within it.
HBA: How did the partnership with NARS come about?
KK: NARS actually reached out to me directly about partnering on this project. I was so honored.I have been admiring the work and style of François Nars for quite some time, so when NARS approached me, I immediately accepted. The brand is so exciting - direct, contemporary, bold, sexy, and audacious – yet so approachable. Those little black boxes filled with magic colors, they are like magnets of beauty!
HBA: How long did it take you to draw each character/image?
KK: I work on my drawings, again and again… and again, until the moment they make me happy. That can take hours, days, or even weeks - it all depends.
HBA: Which one is your favourite and why?
KK: It is difficult to choose just one, but I like the simplest one of the black girl wearing a blue hat. She seems happy and just adores the South of France breeze.
HBA: How involved was Francois in the whole process?
KK: François invited me into this wonderful, make-believe weekend on the Côte d’Azur. He provided the direction. I had to look at my own vision through another lens, which is very challenging but also very educational for me. Every time I collaborate with a brand I find another layer of myself that I didn’t know existed.
HBA: You have previously collaborated with fashion brands, how was this step into the beauty realm different?
KK: Somehow I feel that working for a beauty brand is more liberating and less structured that fashion.
HBA: When did you realize you wanted to be an artist?
KK: I have been drawing since I was little. When I was a child I was not particularly interested in school and would rather spend time with my drawing pads, my pencils and my imagination. I drew a lot of girls with make up on!
HBA: Greatest career highlight so far?
KK: That is a difficult one! Maybe creating my fictional heroine, Mrs. Tependris. I have created books, films, exhibitions, ceramics, and thousands of drawings based on her life’s adventures. Do you know her?
HBA: Finish this sentence, if I wasn’t an artist I would be…
KK: Something creative; I find inspiration in everything around me.
