First it was oats. Then it was milk. Now it’s gold that’s popping up in all sorts of beauty products, including masks and skin cream. But does it work?
“Gold is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can calm acne and reduce redness, and it protects against free radicals that lead to skin wrinkles,” says Hamid. Basically, she adds, it helps fight aging and make your skin healthier.
Don’t just shove gold leaf on your face at home though. “Gold in skincare is used in a liquid form. As a metal form, it would scratch and harm you.”
Also be realistic about the pricing.
“Just because something has gold in it, doesn’t mean it’s valuable. Nothing is wrong with using gold, but it could just make the cream feel more cosmetic,” says Tabasum Mir, a skincare physician.
