In the months following Meghan Markle's wedding to Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex has set out to prove she's shaking things up in the royal world.

From her surprising but ever-so-chic outfit choices (trousers! Sheer dresses! Ripped denim!), to her subversion of society traditions, Meghan has upended a few long-held royal rules in the best way.

But it isn't only her fashion choices turning heads, Meghan's refreshing beauty looks over the past few months have shocked and delighted at every turn. From her iconic messy bun to her penchant for lip gloss and smoky eye makeup, The Duchess of Sussex is an understated beauty hero.

Where Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, faithfully adheres to her own set of beauty rules, Meghan seems intent on breaking them.

Go, girl.

1. Mismatched Earrings

For latest royal appearance at Cardiff Castle, Meghan Markle stepped out wearing mismatched earrings, a particularly edgy style move for a member of the royal family.

Both silver earrings aligned with the minimalist jewellery trend but the designs were quite different. On her right ear was a embellished Zofia Day dash stud and, on the left, a Gabriela Artigas triple shooting star post.

2. The Messy Bun

It would be an understatement to say that the 'messy ballerina bun' is virtually non-existent in the royal world. Between the Queen's carefully coifed hair, Kate Middleton's signature everyday blow-out and Duchess Camilla's poised flicks, royal hair is generally very put together.

So Meghan definitely turned a few heads when she attended her first engagement of 2018 with Prince Harry sporting a nonchalantly messed bun. Her wrapped bun, complete with a few free tendrils to frame the face, might just be a first for the British Royal Family.

3. Contoured Cheeks

At the official Christmas service last year, Meghan kept her makeup relatively fresh and simple underneath her adorable pumpkin-coloured hat. But what we did spot was an artfully-blended bit of contour to carve out her cheekbones, placed just underneath her rosy blush.

For the purpose of not looking 'overdone,' royals don't usually wear contour—or, if they do, it's very light—so seeing it make an entrance on Meghan's razor-sharp cheekbones was a pleasant surprise.

4. Lip Gloss

Whilst attending the Queen's pre-Christmas dinner at Sandringham House, we were delighted to see Meghan sporting a lick of lip gloss along with her smoky eye. Due to associated smearing, hair-stuck-in-gloss difficulties, royals like Kate Middleton avoid wearing gloss in public—for the sake of eluding awkward photos, if nothing else.

But here's hoping Meghan's bringing back a little bit of shine into the fold.

5. Smoky eye

When Meghan attended a night-time Invictus Games event in Canada last year, she was spotted wearing a dramatic smoky eye in a dark grey with strong eyeliner. She paired the look with a light pink lip and long, loose waves.

Royal ladies like Kate Middleton and the Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice tend to stick to the lighter end of smoky eyes by carefully lining their lashlines with browns and greys, so it's definitely refreshing to see Meghan venture out a little more.
