Plus what is Chitosan, the active ingredient?
James Dyson is big on farming – and that extends to not only optimising the growth of fruits and vegetables, but hair as well.
When I sat down with him back in February, a day after the Airstraight had launched in Paris during fashion week (Dyson styling tools have become fixtures backstage – Gary Gill, lead hair stylist at Chloé’s A/W 2024 show used the Supersonic r Hair Dryer to create the models’ effortless, boho-esque waves). I asked him if his company was working on anything else that would help tackle those classic beauty woes so often associated with hair health: hair loss, damage and frizz. You know, those uphill battles women and men are constantly fighting out here in the region, so often caused by extreme humidity and hard water we face on a daily basis.

Unsurprisingly, he said yes. “We are,” he admitted, discussing how the company’s tools limited the temperature of heat on the head, reducing breakage and scalp damage. Would Dyson ever attempt inventing something that could specifically stimulate hair follicles to, well, grow at a faster rate? I pressed. “Why not,” he shrugged. “That’s why we have farms… It is sort of key to some future products.”
As I patiently wait for a device or product that will promote hair growth, something that will magically turn my fine strands into luscious Disney Princess-esque locks, the company has continued its foray into the beauty space. This past week it unveiled a line of styling products designed to work alongside its tools, further tackling a multitude of hair health issues we face when styling our tresses.
Introducing the Dyson Chitosan range.
Bottled in sleek, refillable pump-style dispensers the Dyson Chitosan range is designed to help fight humidity and frizz, while also conditioning strands, to ensure your ’do stays in place for the whole day. The line is comprised of four different pre-styling creams, divided into two different categories by hair type (Straight to Wavy and Curly to Coily, with a choice of either “rich” or “light” conditioning), and one post-styling serum. (Not sure which one is right for you? Take a quick on Dyson.com to be matched with the best product for your styling needs.)

The overall aim was to create a line that could give natural flexibility and movement to the hair, sans that post-styling stiffness we’ve all faced – and fought – after spending too much in front of the mirror.

The trick? It’s all in the science, right down to the molecular level of one particularly fascinating key ingredient in the formulations.
What is Chitosan?
It all comes down to mushrooms – eight different kinds of oyster mushrooms, to be exact. Chitosan, a complex macromolecule found within the fungi’s cell walls, is the key active ingredient in all five products. This is what helps hold natural shape and flexibility within the hair strands.

Are the oyster mushrooms sourced from Dyson farms? The company has said that at the moment it is focusing on creating high-quality food-grade produce for the UK market, though in the future that may change – but it is worth highlighting that Chitosan is engineered by trademarked Dyson Triodetic technology, meaning the same level of innovation and technology that goes into developing the hair tools can also be found within these five bottles.
As well, the creams do include a blend of high-performance silicones and oils, while the serum contains Hyaluronic Acid to protect hair from up to 80% relative humidity. And the line is safe to use on colour and chemically treated hair

At the moment regional residents will need to wait until 2025 before the Dyson Chitosan range will be stocked in the UAE, KSA and the rest of the region. Currently, the line is available for purchase on the Dyson US website, with the pre-styling creams and serum retailing for $59.99 (approx AED220) each.
