Everyone around you coughing and sneezing nowadays? Flu season is starting up again, as more people find themselves feverish and ill.
Though peak months for influenza infections are December, Januiary and February, the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention’s (MoHAP) annual national seasonal influenza awareness campaign is already in full swing. The slogan? “Protect Yourself… Protect Your Community.”
Why Should You Get a Flu Shot?
During the MoHAP press conference on September 19, HE Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Infectious Disease Sector at Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, encouraged community members to consider getting vaccinated against seasonal influenza.
The UAE public health strategy has turned to community health campaigns through avenues such as social media in an effort to reach groups of the population of high importance for the flu shot, stressing the importance of the two-week immunity period post-vaccination. Dr Al Hosany highlighted the virus’s modes of transmission via droplets and contaminated surfaces, reminding us how contagious the seasonal flu is.
The flu is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Some people may also experience vomiting and diarrhea. The flu can be serious, especially for young children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions. In some cases, the flu can lead to hospitalization.
The flu shot is the best way to protect yourself from the flu, significantly reducing the risk of infection while also helping you avoid serious complications. It is a safe and effective vaccine that is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months.
The flu shot is especially important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from the flu, such as:
- Young children
- Older adults
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease
- People who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities
- Healthcare workers
The flu shot is usually given once a year, in the autumn before the flu season begins. However, it is possible to get the flu shot at any time of year. If you have any questions about the flu shot, talk to your doctor.
