It’s lipstick, but not as you know it. With ‘lip styling’ set to be the hottest new trend for summer 2022, meet YSL’s answer to customised colour
Wondering How To Make Your Own Lipstick At Home? Bazaar Arabia shares everything you need to know about YSL’s Beauty Rouge Sur Mesure here…
You can have your morning coffee customised on a whim, so why should your lipstick be any different? Make-up has never been one-size-fits-all given we each have different undertones to our skin. So finding the perfect lipstick for you – one that makes your skin sing – is more often than not a gamble. There’s no universally flattering nude lipstick – some skew a little too peach, others a little too cool. Then there are those of us who are still eluded by the perfect red, while make-up mavens like to match their outfit to their lipstick. No wonder personalisation is being hailed as the future of beauty technology and the YSL Beauty Rouge Sur Mesure is blazing a trail.
The device, which is not unlike a Nespresso machine, is so game-changing, it allows users to custom-blend their own daily YSL Velvet Cream Matte Finish Lipstick shades at the push of a button – and you can virtually try them on too. Five years in the making and the beauty equivalent of a personal lipstick stylist, it leans on artificial intelligence and real-time data to help you choose your perfect shade from over 5,000 different variations.

Naturally the experience starts with a phone App. After that, it’s as simple as attaching the magnetic compact to the machine and inserting the colour cartridges from four shade families: red, orange, nude and fuchsia. Within seconds, the Bluetooth-powered device dispenses a single serving of your customised lip colour into the YSL compact. There’s even a retractable magnetic lip brush for easy application on-the-go.
Perhaps most impressive, though, is the App itself and its three colour creation modes. The first is the Shade Wheel, which, as the moniker suggests, allows you to use a colour wheel to lighten or intensify a lipstick shade. The Shade Match captures your favourite pink nail polish or the red coat Bella Hadid is wearing in her latest Instagram post and creates its nearest lipstick match. Lastly, there’s the Shade Stylist. After uploading a photograph of your outfit, an algorithm recommends two matching lip shades and two that clash. The only limitation? Your imagination.
