With veganism on the rise, here are the A-Listers who subscribe to a plant-based diet

From plant-based meats to ice cream, it’s easier than ever before to go vegan. As millions of people around the world continue to adopt meat- and dairy-free lifestyles, we reflect on the many why someone would choose to opt for a plant-based diet: to pursue of a healthier lifestyle, reduce their carbon footprint and, of course, be kinder to animals. Regardless, sticking to veganism isn’t as easy as it looks, but it certainly isn’t as hard as many think it is. Just takes these celebrities’ words for it.

From Hollywood to Saudi Arabia, Bazaar shares a list of some of the most high-profile vegans and plant-based individuals who have no issues foregoing animal products when it comes to their diet.

Zac Efron 

The actor has been on a self-discovery holistic journey for some time, which he chronicles within his Netflix series Down to Earth. With that being said, Efron has been experimenting with having a fully vegan diet. He explains how veganism completely altered the way his body metabolises food and functions as a whole.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been a vegetarian since the age of 9, and turned vegan in 2011 to help animals, using her voice to fight animal cruelty. “So,now lots of people make fun of vegans, right? Lots of people make fun of anybody who cares about anything deeply, right? But I’m here to say, it is always a great thing to care … whether it’s environmental issues, animal rights, women’s rights, equality, never be afraid to show how much you care,” she’s been quoted saying.

Lizzo

Lizzo went vegan in the summer of 2020, expressing on her Instagram how loving your body is not defined by your weight, nor your size. “I detoxed my body and I’m still fat. I love my body and I’m still fat. I’m beautiful and I’m still fat. These things are not mutually exclusive. I fed myself greens and water and fruit and protein and sunlight,” she said.

Serena and Venus Williams

Being vegans in the athlete world, Serena and her sister Venus Williams are big advocates for a plant-based diet. Williams went vegan back in 2012, and has since then has won The US Open three times over.

A lot of people know Egyptian actor and comedian Bassem Youssef from his breakthrough satire series, El-Bernameg (The Show), but lately, his passion has shifted towards a healthier lifestyle route. He currently runs own plant-based website and diet plan, and has shared his weightloss transformation with his fans.

Prince Khaled has become one of the most prominent vegans in the Middle East and throughout the world, as he champions the plant-based eatting cause. Being Saudi royalty and adapting a healthier lifestyle definitely comes with its challenges, but Prince Khaled’s transformation story goes from overweight, and having high cholesterol to maintaining and practicing a healthier lifestyle.

Joaquin Phoenix

When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and supporting animal rights Joaquin knows a thing or two — after all, he’s been a vegan since he was three. Not only has he dedicated his diet and agenda to animal rights, he also dedicated his Oscars acceptance speech for the best actor award, saying no race, gender or species had rights over another.

Russell Brand

The British Comedian became vegetarian at the age of 14 but embraced the vegan lifestyle for two years starting in 2011, and states that “I was nagged into veganism by society… I was vegetarian from when I was a little kid, 14, because of The Smiths and because of like ‘oh, they do what in factory farms?’.”

The rapper, singer and Black Eyed Peas member openly discusses his veganism and become a huge advocate for all aspects of a vegan lifestyle.

Stevie Wonder

The world-renowned singer Stevie Wonder explained that he decided to go vegan due environmental and health reasons. “I’ve been a vegan for two years, so that’s helped my already good-looking self,” he’s been quoted saying.
