Harper’s Bazaar Arabia (HBA): What does your typical daily routine look like?

Bryony Deery (BD): My daily routine in general is so important for me, especially my morning routine. I’m a real morning person, so a typical day at home would be waking up at 6 am, making my matcha and starting my journaling for the day. One of the most important things for me is silence in the morning, I really appreciate real quiet time – I use it as a time for reflection, almost having like a meeting with myself about the day ahead.

I will then teach a live class or film a class for the Pilates By Bryony app. I’ll do my pilates workout and then have an infrared sauna and an ice bath or a cold shower. After that I will get ready, go for a walk to get my steps in and start my day.

My morning routine is extremely regimented and I love it. I do think my morning routine also kind of starts in the evening. I am really big on winding down, slowing everything down, you know, lighting candles, listening to a jazz playlist and then reading in bed.

HBA: What inspired you to begin your pilates journey?

BD: I actually was involved in a car accident when I was younger, so I entered pilates with the need to heal my body. I was in and out of the hospital constantly and eventually I met this one doctor that was really forward-thinking and he told me that I should try classical pilates. That was before the studios were open, that was before pilates was trendy, so I would have to go into the hospital to do it and it just completely healed my body and changed my life.

HBA: How did you manage to transform your hobby into such a successful business?

BD: I started on Zoom. I started a class with 10 people and I was hosting two live classes a week, it snowballed quite quickly and then suddenly grew to 100 people on Zoom, then 500 people on Zoom and it was growing and growing until eventually had the idea to launch the Pilates By Bryony app. Now we have thousands of people all over the world working out together – the domino effect has been incredible.

HBA: What would you say has been the key to growing such a strong community of women?

BD: I think the key is to always be your authentic self and really put yourself out there, having that real passion to build a community. I make it my mission to bring women together because I know how powerful it is for women to unite with shared goals.

HBA: What are your top-tips for staying on track and in shape whilst travelling often?

BD: This is why I think the Pilates By Bryony app is so great because you can literally workout anywhere. We have just launched a cosy season element which is basically workouts lying on your side or lying on your back, nothing else. You can do anywhere between 5 minutes to 45 minutes, no equipment, in your hotel room standing or lying down, whatever it is, there’s something suitable for everyone. I think that consistency is really the key, so if you are travelling the app makes it so accessible to keep up with working out whilst on the go.

HBA: How do you stay motivated?

BD: I’m not always extremely motivated. Like everyone, my motivation kind off fluctuates but I’ll always be disciplined. I think there’s a difference between being disciplined and being motivated, I really do think something that can help create that discipline is having accountability partners within your network of friends. For example, if I say to you, “oh let’s go and have a workout tomorrow” you know that we’re working out, we’re not cancelling on each other, we’re holding each other accountable, so I think that’s really beneficial. There’s also a few books and podcasts that help me get me into that disciplined mindset. There’s a really good book called No Excuses by Brian Tracy, that’s another helpful tip.

HBA: What are your current holy-grail beauty products?

BD: I have an ice roller which I use religiously every single morning, especially when I’m travelling, it helps so much to reduce puffiness. It’s from the Skinny Confidential, it’s called the Mint Roller. It’s just something I can never leave the house without. I also have a Gua Sha that I use from Face Gym, I love that.

HBA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

BD: Feel the fear and do it anyway. I think really pushing through fear is such a good thing, such a productive thing and it really gets you to step out of your comfort zone.

HBA: What are you most excited about for Pilates By Bryony in the upcoming months?

BD: Oh my gosh, I am so excited about so many things. We have a huge January challenge coming up. Our January challenge is the biggest moment for the Pilates By Bryony community, so I’m really looking forward to that and also going to use it as my own bride to be fitness mission, so we’re all in this together.
