Gucci Sold More Than One Million Lipsticks The Month They Launched

Granting instant gratification to one’s face as much as our Insta feed, Gucci’s debut lipstick collection under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele has proved a huge success.

When the 58 shades launched in May this year, the reception exceeded expectations. According to WWD, the brand sold more than one million lipsticks (priced at Dhs154 each) in the first month alone.

Pierre Laubie, chief executive officer of Coty (the brand’s parent company which also owns the likes of Burberry beauty plus Calvin Klein, Chloé and Marc Jacobs fragrances), confirmed in the interview: “The launch of Gucci lipstick has been a very, very powerful success.”

He continued, “In one store in Asia, in one day, we sold 33,000 lipsticks. I couldn’t believe this could happen, but this is reality, and more than one million lipsticks have been sold over the first month.”

Not only are the pigment-rich bullets a pleasure to apply, but the covetable gold-toned packaging, some adorned with rosebuds recalling vintage prints, make for the ultimate accessory (and one that’s much more accessible for many compared to a GG Marmont quilted shoulder bag, for example).

Given the hunger for Gucci beauty, naturally the brand has more launches in the pipeline. Laubie revealed: “We do know that lipstick is the first step”.

It’s a strategy that gives each make-up category its moment in the spotlight, allowing the brand’s beauty offering to steadily grow in keeping with the signature aesthetic. Palettes next, please.
