Back to Basics: Why Your Self-Isolation Skincare Routine Matters

As we spend more time inside than ever before, many of us find ourselves going make-up free throughout the day. While you might be a fan of your newfound low-maintenance routine and think you can forego certain steps within your skincare routine, this isn’t the case.

While your skin might not be subject to the free radicals of city pollution, staying at home 24/7 comes with its downsides. Dry patches can appear from overexposure to the constant air-conditioning. Lack of Vitamin D can make your complexion appear sullen and, sometimes, applying a bit of makeup can have therapeutic effects - especially when it comes to combating COVID-19 induced anxieties or depression.

Bazaar reached out to make-up artist Rafael Castro from Marquee Salon in Dubai, to discuss tips and tricks when it comes to taking care of your skin, complexion and much more while in quarantine.

1| Cleansing Twice A Day is Still Key

Even if you haven’t applied a stitch of makeup throughout the day, it’s still important to wash your face twice a day. A refreshing cleansing gel can help remove any excess oil or dirt, without stripping the skin of its natural properties.

Pro Tip: Cleansing with cool water can help with redness, puffiness and will leave your face feeling fresh.

Recommended Products: If you’re looking to get into a pre-cleansing process Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost cleanser facial wipes are a total go, especially for sensitive skin. They contain hyaluronic acid which boosts hydration. For the cleansing process, La Mer’s Cleansing Gel is our go-to as its very gentle and doesn’t dry out the skin.

2| Don’t Forget To Exfoliate

“Not many people take the time to do this step, but it’s a very important step within a skincare routine as it helps to rejuvenate the skin cells,” Rafael said.

Pro Tip: Exfoliate once or twice a week to prevent clogged pores and breakouts

Recommended Products: The Body Shop ‘Drops Of Light’ pure resurfacing liquid peel and Innisfree Super Volcanic clay mask are a great exfoliating option, as they’re made out of natural ingredients and are gentle to the skin.

3| Pamper Your Skin with Serums and Hydrating Cream

Get that healthy, plump glow by incorporating a nutritive serum into your routine once you’ve finished cleansing your face. Top it off with moisturising cream to offset any dry areas from the constant air-conditioning that comes with being indoors 24/7.

Pro tip: Don’t swap one for the other. Use both the serum and moisturising cream together for best results.

Recommended Products: Enriched with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5, the Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydration helps retaining water on your skin’s surface, giving it more of a hydrated and plumper look. Pair it with Glamglow’s moisturising cream, a product highly rich omegas and antioxidants that will leave your skin hydrated and naturally glowing.

4| Don’t Forget Your Eyes!

Apply undereye products gently with your ring finger by using a light tapping motion.

Pro Tip: Any left over product on your finger can be lightly tapped onto your brow bone.

Recommended Product: A super-light and revitalising eye cream is always an excellent choice. Korean brand Innisfree’s pomegranate revitalising eye essence is a great option, especially when it comes to hydrating and minimizing the look of fine lines.

5| Does Your Home Office Have A Window? Then Don’t Forget The SPF!

Being in self isolation or quarantine doesn’t mean you aren’t exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. If you spend any time outside in your garden or on your balcony, you’re still susceptible to sun damage. This is why it’s important to wear SPF if you’re working from home anywhere near a window or pop out to stock up on groceries.

Recommended Product: La Roche-Posay Antishine Anthelio XL. It doesn’t leave an oily residue on your face, soaks into the skin quickly and is fragrance free.
