The soft sounds of trickling water emanate from one of the sleekly designed contemporary fountains at the new Nikki Beach Resort & Spa. The setting is white and minimalist, far-removed from the opulent designs of the majority of Dubai’s five-star properties. In many ways resembling a large, residential bungalow on the beach, the simplicity of this new property is intentional; its understated ambiance and bare interiors bring a dose of Miami cool to a high-strung Dubai. I walked through the property’s long, white halls and outdoor corridors, each aligned with calming water features interspersed with touches of verdant greenery, catching glimpses of the beach outside and its wild palm trees swaying in the hot summer breeze. The hotel’s minimalist surroundings meld well with the outdoor Arabian sands – the atmosphere envelops you in stillness.
I arrive at the spa and a stylishly white setting greets me. Light and airy, the interiors exude a brightness that immediately transports me away from the gnawing bustle of the outside city. A beachside wellness sanctuary designed, like the hotel, with sleek lines, simple furnishings and lots of empty space, the spa features solo and social spaces comprising seven spa-suites for men and women, one devoted couple’s suite, a hamman chamber, steam room and sauna, ice fountain, mixed vitality pool and indoor and outdoor relaxation lounges. Walk amidst the corridors and, like me, you’ll find plenty of wellness corners to explore.
After weeks on end of travelling and the hot Dubai summer now upon me, I decided on a Radiance Facial. During this type of climate – one which finds you oscillating between igloo-like air conditioning and sauna-like outdoors – your skin, especially if it’s sensitive like mine, immediately takes a hit. The spa uses ESPA products, one of my favourite brands for its natural approach to beauty and its silky consistency infused with alluring aromatherapy. A revitalising facial treatment, over the next hour my skin was moisturised and smoothed through a special application of ESPA Skin Radiance Moisturizer, which is rich in natural AHAs and BHAs from Hawaiian Algae and Meadowsweet, helping to smooth and reduce irregular pigmentation and brighten the skin. Feeling refreshed and revitalised, after my treatment was completed I was led to the relaxation room – another area dressed all in white and boasting large floor-to-ceiling windows from where I could admire the beach scene outside without venturing into the heat (for cooler times there is an outdoor relaxation area).
After thirty minutes with a book in hand and a ginger tea to sip, my time at the Nikki Spa had come to an end. It was sunset, and as I walked down the long white corridors, I noticed the lights had come on warming the water features with subtle, golden rays. It was magical. As I waited for my car, I sat briefly outside, defying the heat, and relished in the wild beauty of the Arabian Gulf.
