Venice Film Festival 2022: The Best Beauty Looks

Zoom in on the red carpet hair and make-up details

The global pandemic may have restricted the grandiose spirit of the Venice Film Festival over the past few years, but the return of its red carpets mean some stellar fashion and beauty looks to admire. Indeed, the world’s longest-running film festival appears better than ever in 2022.

From Sydney Sweeney and Maude Apatow’ autumnal elegance to Tessa Thompson’s maximalist glamour and Irina Shayk’s eye-catching aesthetic – trends are being set for the sartorial season ahead.

Here, see Bazaar‘s pick of the very best beauty looks from the Venice Film Festival 2022.

Gemma Chan

Gemma Chan shone on the Don’t Worry Darling red carpet with metallic eye make-up mirroring her dazzling Louis Vuitton dress. Her hair was styled in a voluminous high bun, with loose tendrils framing her features.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh put a new spin on old Hollywood glamour with her crop styled in a sleek wave by stylist Peter Lux. Her luminous make-up by artist Alex Babsky came courtesy of Valentino Beauty. “When this lip colour went on, we both swooned!” he wrote on Instagram of the brand’s Rosso Valentino lipstick in shade 108A.

Olivia Wilde

Here, Olivia Wilde’s make-up by Wendy Rowe centred on flawless skin and elegant definition. Her hair by Christian Wood was crafted into soft, undone waves, much like the style he created for the actress and producer earlier on in the festival, where she embraced a maximalist make-up look with a statement star motif gracing her right eye.

Sydney Sweeney

Sydney Sweeney looked endlessly chic with her hair styled half back and accessorised with a velvet Jennifer Behr bow, the work of stylist Glen Coco Oropeza. Her make-up, by Melissa Hernandez using Armani Beauty, featured gentle feline flicks of liner and soft pink lipstick – the brand’s Lip Power Longwear Satin Lipstick in shade #108.

Maude Apatow

Sweeney’s Euphoria costar Maude Apatow looked similarly elegant pairing muted eye make-up with a classic red lip; Armani Beauty’s Lip Power in #400 and Lip Maestro in #420 “layered for max coverage and vibrancy” – her make-up artist Mélanie Inglessis said on Instagram. The actress’ hair was styled in sleek ‘S’ waves by A-list stylist Peter Lux, which added to her graceful glamour.

Laura Harrier

Laura Harrier demonstrated exactly how the retro trend for ‘flippy ends’ can look highly polished. Her hairstylist Renato Campora set her hair in a deep side parting and with a modern, smoothed-down finish, gently flicked out the ends. Touches of metallic with her make-up also lent a freshness to the look.

Sadie Sink

Stranger Things star Sadie Sink brought some ethereal glamour with mermaid-style waves (the work of Halley Brisker) and soft shimmery eye make-up paired with simple black liner and soft pink lips (thanks to make-up artist Nina Park).

Penelope Cruz

If you’re yet to get back on board with Nineties- and Noughties-inspired straight hair, let Penelope Cruz’s look inspire you. The actress also brought back another beauty staple from that era; smoky eye make-up, which she paired with pink lipstick – a trend set to soar as we embrace ‘Barbiecore’ this autumn/winter.

Irina Shayk

On the subject of smoky eyes, Irina Shayk interpreted the trend in an entirely graphic manner, modelling this bold make-up alongside an otherwise minimal look.

Chloë Sevigny

Always one to bring a unique take on the trends, Chloë Sevigny added interest to a simple low bun with the addition of finger waves framing her face. Her make-up, by Gucci Beauty, centred on dramatic lashes and arresting red lips.

Simone Ashley

Another smoky eye was seen on Simone Ashley, her artist Alex Babsky using Armani Beauty’s Smooth Silk Eye Pencil to achieve the look. Her intricate up-do came courtesy of Halley Brisker, combining some classic romance and modernity thanks to the braid juxtaposed with blunt ends beneath it.

Tessa Thompson

To enhance her dramatic outfit comprised of top-to-toe red, Tessa Thompson’s lips were painted by artist Cedric Jolivet in the Armani Beauty Rouge d’Armani Matte shade 400. Beneath her cape, Thompson’s natural curls were styled by Lacy Redway with soft texture.
