Harper’s Bazaar Arabia (HBA): How did you meet your husband and how long have you been together

Asallah Kamel (AK): We’ve been together for five years. We grew stronger together throughout these years and we had countless challenges to get to this point and make it official.

I love his kindness and the way he sees life. He supports me and allows me to grow and thrive, he comforts me… I love how we balance each other out. He’s the calm to my chaos.

HBA: Why did you wait so long to announce your engagement?

AK: I wanted to announce it before my katb kitab – I see what’s trending now these days that the proposal move is every girl’s dream, but I wanted to embrace the traditional ways that it should be followed by an official marriage contract. So, I announced it a week before. When everything is official it hits differently!

HBA: Tell us more about the proposal.

AK: I’ve been dreaming of that day. We had a plan to make it official in the summer, but I had no idea he would do it on my birthday. My friends asked me out for a white yacht party and when I arrived I found him on his knees asking me to marry him.

HBA: What did you wear to the katb kitab?

AK: I wore a beautiful white traditional thobe. It comes in three pieces — a dress, abaya, and shaila — from Ashyana and another pistachio green dress from Solace London.

HBA: Tell us about the ring.

I can’t get over how beautiful my ring is! The shape and the size are exactly what I wanted. I also love the gold band detail. I wanted something unique and timeless.

HBA: You then changed into a second look.

AK: I’m on a journey of [dressing] modestly and I wanted to look chic and elegant, so I chose a dress that was more covered yet still looked like a gown.

HBA: What about traditional Moroccan celebrations? Will you do any?

AK: A lot of people saw me wearing and celebrating the Moroccan way, thinking that [my husband is] Moroccan. He is not, he’s Emirati!

But most of my friends are Moroccan. My family and I are rooted in Moroccan traditions and we have always spent holidays there. My friend Samira even came all the way from Morocco to celebrate with us.

HBA: What is your vision for your big day?

AK: I probably won’t do a big wedding. We really enjoyed our katb kitab, celebrating with our families and we felt all the love and joy in an intimate way. However, I am planning to do a massive Indian henna night with all my girlfriends.
