Inside The Wedding Of Marjorie Azevedo Soter And Abdulrahman Talal Bakir

A casual dinner with mutual friends at La Cantine in Dubai brought 29-year-old Brazilian founder of My Next Dress, Marjorie Azevedo Soter and Saudi Arabian International Investments Director, Abdulrahman Talal Bakir, 30, together for the first time. “I really wasn’t in the mood to dress up and go out, so I reluctantly went along with wet hair and minimal make-up,” Marjorie recalls of the night the couple met in January 2016. “I never would have thought I’d meet the love of my life. The table was huge, and Abdul and I weren’t even sitting near each other, but he asked for my phone number and invited me out to dinner the very next day. We clicked in every possible way and two years later he surprised me by popping the question while on a trip to my hometown of São Paulo, in Brazil.”

Admittedly, Marjorie found it a little strange when her father and fiancé-to-be went to lunch alone — little did she know that Abdul was seeking her father’s permission to propose. “When they returned from lunch, Abdul and I drove out to my family’s farm to go for a walk and to get some fresh air. It was the day before Christmas and Abdul said he would like to give me my present while we were alone. He presented me with a book, filled with photographs of the last two years we had spent together, each picture accompanied by a handwritten message. At the end of the book was the question, ‘will you marry me?’ and when I looked up, Abdul was down on one knee holding a beautiful engagement ring in a box. I will never forget that moment.”

As soon as the newly engaged couple arrived back in Dubai, they began their search for a venue and wedding planner, teaming up with Eventchic Designs to create their dream day, while Marjorie turned her attention to creating her dream dress.

“I knew I wanted a custom-made gown, so I enlisted my dear friend and talented designer, Leidiane Flores. She sketched my vision and we selected the fabrics and beading details. The gown took six months to handmake — it was huge and heavy and absolutely beautiful.”

The centrepieces featured fresh flowers, candles and tall candelabras to create the bride’s vision of a “chic jungle”

On March 8, 2019, the happy couple wed in front of 250 guests at the Palazzo Versace Dubai. “The ceremony was remarkable. We had a wonderful celebrant who helped us write our vows in the lead up to the day. He shared our love story during the ceremony — it was very emotional.” Marjorie says.

As for the reception, guests dined on a bespoke set menu whilst being serenaded by an opera singer. Dishes included shrimp tartare with caviar and lemongrass followed by asparagus risotto with wild salmon. To finish, Wagyu beef with truffled parsnip cannelloni. The wedding cake — vanilla with sweet strawberry cream — was swathed in a colourful arrangement of both sugar and fresh flowers.

For the evening, the bride changed into a custom-made Lucas Anderi gown before the first dance. “I knew the song that I wanted to share my first dance with my husband to from the day we got engaged. It was Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion. That song means so much to us. Just like the lyrics go, Abdul has always been my strength when I was weak, and he really did see the best in me.”
