The perfect European retreat for the last few weeks of summer

Escape To: Jumeirah Port Soller In Mallorca, Spain

Allegedly, King Louis XIV would only eat the oranges that grew in the Sóller Valley, which might give you an idea why their juice is the first thing that you're greeted with on arrival at Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa. Scaling the hills of Mallorca's stunning north-west coast, this resort boasts almost-360-degrees views across the pine-covered slopes of the Serra deTramuntana, sliding dramatically into the horseshoe harbour of the Sóller Port. Consisting of 11 white staggered buildings, the hotel stretches almost a kilometre in length, leading you through meandering stone paths peppered with local botanical plants. The rooms are decorated in a contemporary style, enhanced with bespoke art and wooden walk-in wardrobes – but the real star of this show is the breathtaking beauty of the views.

Accommodation
Whether you opt for a mountain view or upgrade for a sea one, you will still find yourself staring into the distance as you shower in front of the glass walls.  Don't waste any time looking for clunky, paper-crammed folders with information about the hotel; instead, you'll have your own personalised "Suite-Pad"– a tablet that will enable you to read your paper, contact the concierge to organise your complimentary shoe-shine or request a turndown service for your bed (which is so large, you could lose your remote control for days).  If you're feeling flush, book the Lighthouse Suite, a vast, split-level apartment with its very own tree-shrouded Jacuzzi on a terrace with prime views of the namesake Cap Gros Lighthouse.

Wow factor
This Balearic beauty has plenty: the infinity pool towards the top of the hotel, which challenges you to spot where the sky ends and glistening Mediterranean begins; the Talise Spa, with its fancy gym and treatments that showcase the hotel's favourite fruit (we recommend the Mediterranean Orange Wrap); and a spectacular cliff-top thermal pool for you to wind down in while deciding on what to do next. Get even hotter in the Bio Sauna, or chill right down in the stress-busting Ice Chamber. Decisions, decisions.

Finishing touches
You get the impression that the Jumeirah Group is rather good at finishing touches; the turndown service, handwritten notes, towelling-lined satin gowns that hang beautifully over the (removable) coathangers are just the start. From the moment you arrive, you are constantly reminded that the 300 members of staff are there to make your stay memorable. If you requested hot milk with your coffee at breakfast one morning, you won't have to ask for it again the next. They will address you on first-name terms, never say no and generally provide you with a service that makes Jumeirah stand out from the rest. And fancy arriving in a private jet? They can sort that out for you, too.

What to do
If you do feel the urge to leave the luxurious confines of the hotel, there are many excursions on offer through the concierge, including trekking in Tramuntana and a "Heli-Hike" (a helicopter ride combined with a sumptuous lunch and a swim in crystal-clear lagoons). Take the hotel shuttle down to the port for a ride on the early-20th-century wooden tram that will take you on a picturesque journey up through the mountains and into the old town, winding through vineyards and orange groves until you reach the main square of Sóller town, overlooked by the impressive 13th-century Sant Bartomeu cathedral. Stroll through the narrow streets, grab a gelato at Giovanni L and hop back on the tram in time for dinner at the hotel – or, if you want to stay at the port, a must-visit is Kingfisher on Carrer de Santa Apollonia, which serves such gastronomic delights as a seafood stew, piled so high with shellfish that you can barely get to the bottom or the squid-ink tagliatelle oozing with lime zest.
