Louvre Couture: A Journey Through the Evolution of Haute Couture
Discover iconic designs by 45 legendary Maisons at the Louvre Couture exhibition
The Louvre in Paris, home to some of the world’s most iconic art masterpieces, has opened its latest exhibition Louvre Couture this week; a breathtaking fashion exhibition that invites visitors to embark on a journey of evolution of the world of couture from the 1960s to 2025. Running from January 24 to July 21 in the Department of Decorative Arts, the exhibition is perfectly timed to coincide with Paris couture week, which takes place from January 27 to 30, making it a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts descending upon the city.
Louvre Couture presents 65 iconic designs, as well as accessories, carefully curated to showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of 45 renowned maisons and designers. The exhibition celebrates the artistry and innovation that have defined couture over the decades, offering a glimpse into how fashion has evolved while remaining rooted in its traditions. Some of the celebrated maisons featured include Jean Paul Gaultier, Iris van Herpen, Balmain, Dior, Alexander McQueen, and many more. The exhibition also highlights the evolution of fashion houses like Dior and Schiaparelli, showcasing designs from different eras under the creative visions of iconic directors such as John Galliano and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Many legendary designers, including Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, and Yves Saint Laurent, were regular visitors to the Louvre and drew inspiration from the museum’s masterpieces. This relationship between the surrounding art and the world of haute couture is reflected in the designs on display and where they are placed in the museum. Notable pieces include a silk Dior gown by John Galiano from his 2006-2007 Autumn/Winter collection, a Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture gown crafted in 2008, as well as a velvet Balenciaga gown placed in one of the dining rooms in the Napoleon III apartments – the ultimate marriage of fashion, luxury and art.
