The Third Lines Inaugurates New Space
Acclaimed Iranian artist Monir Farmanfarmaian was on display for the debut showcase at the new location, with an elegant evening celebrating ‘Infinite Geometry’
The geometric artworks of Iranian nonagenarian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian have graced the walls of many a museum. Now joining forces with Dubai-based gallery, The Third Line, in celebration of their new creative space in Alserkal Avenue, Farmanfarmaian is giving viewers a front row seat to the ceremonious coming-together of Islamic tessellation and Western Abstraction. Running from the January 5th, the solo presentation featuring a range of drawings, carpets, and mirror works, will also incorporate drawings made in the early 90s, some which are being presented for the first time.
A master of her trade, Farmanfarmaian’s eminent career spans more than five decades and boasts an array of personal and professional revolutions including being exiled from Iran and becoming acquainted with Post-Modern visionary, Andy Warhol. All of this translates into the production of her recent exhibition, Infinite Geometry.

Through a miscellany of glass paintings and mirror mosaics, Monir sparks important discourse over the melange of surface texture, light, colour and form in relation to Islamic art and contemporary sensibility. In addition, viewers can bear witness to Monir’s artistic shift from the whimsicality of her work in the 90’s – a result of her appreciation for Western art – to the roulette curves and calculated symmetry of her present work that recalls the precision and heritage of Islamic Geometry.
The exhibition runs until January 30, 2016
