Meem Gallery Presents Dia Azzawi: My Broken Dream

The Iraqi artist explores the concept of conquest and invasion in his latest show at Dubai’s Meem Gallery

After having taken over two years to complete, Meem Gallery in association with Emirates Investment Bank proudly presents My Broken Dream by Dia Azzawi, a body of work with colossal impact, both physically and metaphorically. Measuring over four metres in height and ten in length, the monochromatic work dominates and devours both viewer and space, evoking a demanding, quiet and contemplative reflection.

The piece, which in itself is a manifestation of sorts, provides a profound reaction and commentary to and against the invasion of Iraq by the United States of America. Whilst a retrospection of Azzawi’s work proves to be conceptually and visibly darker, his more recent work, including My Broken Dream, celebrates the vivacious vividness of colour along with the dynamic nature of abstraction. Audiences are invited into a world where the confluence of geopolitics and the suffering of a community are at its forefront – a world Azzawi brings to life with the precise employment of contemporary abstract style.
