Curatorium: Emerging Artists to Premier at Venice Biennale

The Montblanc Cultural Foundation will debut its newest initiative at the upcoming 57th Venice Biennale

The Montblanc Cultural Foundation enables young and emerging artists to produce new works within the context of a temporary exhibition, a biennale, or an art festival. The works are then acquired by the foundation for its collection, which to date has awarded over four million euros to educational programmes, community art centres and cultural heritage projects.

Now, under the chairmanship of Art Reoriented duo Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, the foundation has announced its newest initiative Curatorium. The programme will be formally launched in May 2017 at the Venice Biennale, and from 2018 it will feature a two-year rotational committee of established curators and institutional directors who will work together to internally nominate and select recipients of the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award, which has recognised over 250 art patrons in the last 25 years, and aid in acquisitions for the Montblanc Art Collection.

The first edition will feature Anne Barlow, artistic director of Tate St Ives; Sunjung Kim, director of Art Sonje Center Seoul; Jean de Loisy, president of Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Franklin Sirmans, director of Perez Art Museum Miami; and Jochen Volz, director of Pinacoteca de Sao Paolo, on the committee alongside Bardaouil and Fellrath.

“Each member of the Curatorium has a wealth of experience in working closely with artists and art patrons, and we are delighted to have their support over the coming years,” said the two chairmen in a statement.

Curatorium will debut in Venice with a commission by Manila-based artists Katherine Nuñez and Issay Rodriguez, whose research-based diverse media body of work unpacks the complex narratives that define history. After its presentation in the main biennale exhibition Viva Arte Viva, curated by Christine Macel, the installation will travel to the Montblanc Cultural Foundation’s headquarters in Hamburg in 2018.
