LACMA buys painting by Iranian artist Asad Faulwell

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art continues its promotion of Middle Eastern artists with the purchase of Faulwell’s Iran: Pillars (1882-1989)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has acquired Iran: Pillars (1882-1989), a 2009 painting by Iranian artist Asad Faulwell, continuing its active acquisitions programme of contemporary Middle Eastern art.

The purchase, announced by Dubai gallery Lawrie Shabibi who represent the Los Angeles based artist, is part of an ongoing push by LACMA to acquire more works through its Art of the Middle East CONTEMPORARY fund. The Los Angeles museum is currently highlighting the work of fellow Iranian artist YZ Kami, now New York based, in a solo exhibition titled Endless Prayers until 19 March.

Until 5 February, Lawrie Shabibi is showing Faulwell’s latest works from his ongoing Les Femmes d’Alger series in an exhibition titled In the Heart of the Cosmos in its Dubai space. This series of ornate, highly coloured mixed media works is based on the largely forgotten female Algerian freedom fighters, who fought alongside men as equals during the 1954-1966 Algerian war for independence from French occupation.
