Royal Ontario Museum Appoints New Islamic Art and Culture Curator
The museum has appointed Fahmida Suleman as curator of the department that currently features the largest holding of Islamic art in Canada
Fahmida Suleman has joined the Royal Ontario Museum’s department of Islamic Art and Culture as the section’s curator, an institutional department that currently features the largest holding of Islamic art in Canada. She will join the Toronto-based museum from her previous position as curator of Modern Middle East at the British Museum in London.
Suleman, who has a PhD in Islamic Art and Archaeology from Oxford University, UK, will be in charge of helping build the Canadian museum’s collection, developing public programming and exhibitions. The director and CEO of the museum Josh Basseches shared in a statement that the museum aims to engage visitors and communities more deeply, and that Suleman’s scholarly, curatorial and programming experience will refresh the view of Islamic art and culture in a contemporary context, reported Artforum. She will adopt the role as of January 2019.
