How Emirati Ceramic Artist Hessa Al Ajmani Adds A Unique Touch to Her Art
The Ajman-based ceramicist utilises the beauty of nature to create one-of-a-kind pieces…
Born in Abu Dhabi and currently living in Ajman, Hessa’s practice as an artist is influenced by “curiosity of the human psychology and the natural world, and the idea of observing things which are not so noticeable, but are often present in human interactions and daily commutes.”
Hessa’s current ceramics work reflects her passion for exploration and observation, imprinting native plants and wildflowers onto ceramicware. This process provides her with a form of research to better understand the UAE’s native plants.
In an Instagram post that shows one of her ceramic pieces, she writes, “Dill flowers and little iron weed wildflowers from mom’s garden.”
In 2019, Hessa established Clay Corner Studio, the first public arts studio in Ajman dedicated to ceramics and painting. At the studio, she manages and teaches regular ceramic classes. The studio also caters to both professional and amateur artists, and offers various memberships, facilities, and private spaces for people to enjoy.
She also works in Sharjah Art Foundation’s Community and Outreach Programme where she organizes workshops, outings, and events to help engage the Sharjah community with the art world.
Some of Hessa’s work has appeared at the Emirates Fine Arts Society’s Annual Exhibition at Sharjah Art Museum, Markers & Makers Exhibition in Manarat Al Saadiyat, and Vantage Point 6 at Sharjah Art Foundation.
